PO relocated my 74 3-port fuel pump to the rear fire wall to the right of the the speedo cable, fuel lines, flapper wires, etc.

I've got the fuel tank out to replace the fuel lines with SS ones now, but I don't want to relocate the fuel pump up front if I don't have to (don't like it being below the steering rack). Is this location far enough away from the HE's to avoid problems?

You may create problems with the pump there. The factory relocated the pump up front to help eliminate vapor lock. The SS lines will conduct heat much better than the old plastic lines, thus causing vapor lock. Many have relocated to the front trunk. It's easy to get to there.

If you don't want to move it, leave it there and see what happens. You can always relocate it later.

Thought I read somewhere on World that the HE dump from the passenger flapper box on the pump in the stock location caused the vapor lock issue - so in this position is it enough to get it out of the flapper box discharge air stream?

I may leave it here for now, but pull a spare fuel pump wire up to the front while I'm pulling the SS lines.

I can't see why it would not be fine there if its not too high. At least the flapper is not dumping the heat directly on it like the stock location. Id leave it till i had a problem.

It's really not that much work moving it to the front. You went this far, why not alittle further? You'll most likely never have a vapor lock issue with the pump, being where its at now. It's just a peace of mind issue for me, if it was my car.

Had it up front on my last car and didn't like how it sat beneath the steering rack / how the hoses got routed through the hand hole.

Another option is to mount the pump beneath the tank, just forward of the reservoir brake lines. Plenty of space, just make sure it's mounted low enough to clear the anti-roll bar, if your car has one.

The downside is access, but the pumps are reliable, and pulling the tank is not that difficult. Just make sure all your hose connections are solid (I double-clamped everything on the high pressure side of the pump).

i mounted mine in approx the same position. no probs with heat that i've noticed aside from the fuel in the webers after a long sit on a hot day, after shut down. well away from the vent on the flapper valve. where did you place your filter?

Think I'm going to put the filter up front under the tank at the hand hole. PO left it in the stock location.
