I going to be building a DIY smoke tester to find a vacuum leak on my sons 99 Explorer.
I was wondering has anyone used one on a 914?

I'm thinking we would inject from the MPS hose to keep the smoke off the diaphragm.

I am the tool whore. But I'm not feeling the love on even a well used one.

I think it's still easier to use carb cleaner or starter fluid and observe an RPM change. Not sure whet the advantage of smoke is other than flamability. But, the smoke generator coule still burn, so maybe it's a wash.

I always used a propane torch. Just open the valve (unlit) and move it about the hoses, lines, intake system. Simple and cheap.

We use one regularly at the dealership. Trying to diagnose evap or vacuum systems on any current car without one would be much harder.

On the new cars the stuff is packed in there pretty tight.
I was pretty certain what the problem was. It was nice to see the smoke come out from exactly where I thought it would come from.

I found one useful for checking out the CIS system on my 911. I was worried about a cracked air box. BTW Cary, want the mounts?

+1. I built one using a GMC diesel glow-plug and glycerin/water mix to find a vacuum leak in my '97 BMW 328i. The leak was under the intake manifold, which was impossible to find using the age-old remedies (carb cleaner, propane, etc.). Pumping the smoke into the air filter end of the intake and seeing it plume out under the manifold was glorious...
