So I've had my 74 for the last 4 or 5 years. I've put about 10k miles on it as I have a few VW's I drive on the weekends. I tried to sell it to focus on my other cars but no biters so I have pulled the gun and I am redoing the car to keep. It's a fully loaded 74 with A/C and an appearance group. It's delphi green with the Ricardo Montalban dark corinthian leather interior lol-2.gif I figured if i post pics of my progress it will motivate me to finish it. So here it is...

It was poorly repainted and although it looks presentable, the paint is shit. It is super clean as far as rust and interior paint so I am only doing an outer respray.

That's all I've done this week. My friend is helping with the body work. He's pretty damn good. Will post more pics as I go along.

Good for you. I love delphi.

Got some more work done today on the hood and doors. Blocked them out to get them ready for paint.

At the end of the day I have to install whatever parts I take off and drive the car home because my friend doesnt have extra space at his shop. I have removed everything I possibly can off the car so there will be no tape marks on the exterior.

Should have some more done in the next few days and I plan on painting it this weekend if all goes as planned.

Taken halfway apart. Everything that would have been taped to paint has been removed.

The only thing that wont be stock are the side marker lights. They are gone!

Got the car almost done. It's been blocked three times so there are no waves in the panels. I could paint it tomorrow but I am going to wait until my friend has some time off next week to do it in a booth. Here are some progress pics.

Just waiting till next week to shoot it. It will be painted delphi green again. Every panel has been straightened and primered. The biggest task was the drivers fender which was pushed in, but now looks perfect.

The jackstands are under the other 914 that I have on the side of the garage. Doesn't everyone have 2(or more) 914's? lol-2.gif

Finally!!!!!!!!! Had to wait to get an open spot at the paint booth. Drove it there today and left it overnight. I pick it up tomorrow. Delphi Green metallic!

Laid the base green color, so as not to use too much of the green paint which was $150 for half a gallon blink.gif

Very nice. It is terrific to see these cars getting refreshed so they look like new again. aktion035.gif

Looks amazing, I really love that color and was so close to buying one that color, but I lost out on it.

If its possible can you tell me what something like that costs? I have an L80E that I would love to have someone do the same type of respray, but I'm clueless as to what ballpark I would be in for that.

wow that look's dope as shit... when i repaint mine i am also going to lose the left and right front quarter indicators on the side... the lines just look so much better uninterrupted when you see the bumper end and wheel well and then just a smooth body panel...

Great looking paint job! first.gif

Love that color.

It is very motivating to keep a thread going.

I've had 3 estimates on my L80E all at $3000-$3500 if I R&R all the stuff. That included sanding down to metal and touching up the door/parking lot dings. Unforseen body work would be extra. L80E would be an "easy " color to paint. I had a signal orange one done that took 6 coats and still the doors don't QUITE match the fenders. The metallic colors would probably be more.

Drive around to a couple of body shops. They're usually pretty good to talk to you. Sometimes you'll fine the high volume ones just want to do insurance claims.

Sorry to hijack the tread. Let's see more of that gorgeous green.

I have about $800 in paint and supplies and $1000 in bodywork and paint labor. I dismantled the car myself and helped block the body. Although there was no rust, i found it is a very time consuming process to do the bodywork. There's about 60 hours so far, and it still needs wetsanding and buffing

Thanks guys that helps a lot. I did a respray on an Alaska Blue Metallic in the late 80's, but had the help of a guy who was experienced. I appreciate the feedback, and I love watching this thread....it is so cool to see the progress of this paint job, and it looks like it came out perfect.
type2man
Some shots of it out in the daylight. It still needs to be wetsanded and buffed for more shine.

The sun really changes the color on it. That and the fact that paint in 1974 was not as good in quality compared to what we have today.
ThePaintedMan
Man, so many cars being redone or finished lately! What a great thing, and yours is another great example of how to do it right. Beautiful car, congrats! Good timing too - it looks like you warded off some stuff which eventually would have rusted through (around the sills, etc) and now you don't have to worry about it! Great job.
type2man
So I've been collecting parts for the 914 and slowly putting it back together but the rain here in Miami has been brutal so progress is slow. Still need to get some bumper tops and a dash and decide what interior to to put in but I got some new shoes. Yes, they are 5 lug. I have an extra 914/6 with all the 5 lug stuff out of a 911 so it will be converted soon.

So it's been a while since I posted. The cars been in the garage untouched until last week when I got the ball rolling again. I had the car buffed and I am putting it back together. Here are some pics of the progress

Front bumper is toast but it's all I have for now until I can find a better one. I installed the plate to cover up the damage to the bumper.

Located and installed a pretty decent used dash. Installed the front dash vinyl. Still have to lift it back up and permanently glue it in place. Note the gargantuan hole in the tunnel that the previous owner cut out to fix the clutch tube. SWEET!

Wow. Very nice job on the sail trim! Personally I prefer body colored uncovered sails, but it looks like you did an immaculate job on those! Really nice job. Congrats! The paint looks fantastic too!

Nice Type 2 by the way! biggrin.gif

Update on the 914. I decided to put alloys on it instead of the gasburners. Gotta take some more pics out of the garage.

Just picked up half of my interior from the upholstery shop. I wasn't sure when the guy told me he might not be able to find the brown leather with the correct marbling for my car but he sure did!!!! I had the inserts done in gold houndstooth. I'll have more pics in the when I pick up the rest of the interior. I'm stoked how nice it came out.... beer3.gif

Still not done with the interior, looks like i am on the 10 year plan at the rate I am going but at least it sits in the garage. At least the car has always run and never on jackstands piratenanner.gif . I have to install the door panels and carpet and work on the stance. I cant go any lower in the front because it bottoms out on the struts so I am going to try to modify the 911 struts I have and cut the springs in the back some more.....
