Full Version: Red rear reflector And trunk release

Do you mount the trunk release switch next to the engine lid pull ? If so, how long a switch is needed to go through the fire wall and backpad ? Seems like there are better places to put it- what do you have ?

And, how is the emergency pull wire mounted to the solenoid? I don't see a place where there is going to be sufficient leverage

When I had mine, it was under the arm rest mounted to the tray.

This is an electrical switch right? Why wouldn't you mount it anywhere you like? The backup pull is mechanically attached isn't it? I haven't ever seen any of these.

Years ago when I had one of these I added a solid wire that ran through the floor of the truck so I could pull it to open the trunk when the motor went crazy and I couldn't get in the trunk.

Mine is to the right and above the rear Tag on the Bumper. You can't see it. I don't have a emergency pull, might have to check that out.

mine is mounted under dash right next to the fuse panel. mine dosent work of course so I took the catch out and hope the trunk never flies up. it was that way when I got the car and one day i will trouble shoot it.

Mine is mounted in the corner of the fuse panel!

mine is in the same spot on the other side of the fuse panel, must be a east coast/west coast thing. does yours work?

Yep!

It didn't for a while until I adjusted the spring on the trunk latch, now it works great!

On my old 914, it was mounted into the glove box. Open the door and push.

Connect it to the latch at the same point the solenoid connects.

I mount the safety pull wire to the fulcrum point of the trunk
latch lever. I drilled a tiny hole , then looped the wire through. A small amount of solder onto the
exposed loop of wire. Just a small gauge wire, snake it into the engine compartment, with a small
piece of vacuum hose on the end (handy for grabbing).
If you saw my engine bay at the Phoenix club, you didn't even notice the safety
pull next to the flat fan.

Of course, unless you need to lock your trunk, you don't even need the latch. Trunk stays down on its own.

If it were mine... I would weld a bracket... Like this. With a hole in the end for the cable.

Here is how I did mine on my 74!

It has a handle in the engine compartment!

Jeff - Did you make any mods to the solenoid ? Looks like the trip wire is attached to the pivot pin

Yes I made another pin that holds the pivot arm to the plunger. It extends out with a loop so I could hook the pull cable and added a return spring to help it return to the up position!

The car has been long ago sold, at least 10 years ago, so the exact details I can't remember!

Like the spring, the pull wire pases through the base near the plunger; did you just make a hole or is that a tube ?

Me too, but to the left in my F/G bumper. Emergency pull is only a hole in the bottom of the trunk that I would have to push a wire through.
I did have to use the wire once and I had a battery sitting on top of the hole headbang.gif But it still worked after a lot of pushing and fishing.
BTW, My mechanism is home made and may have used a Honda solenoid. confused24.gif

I used an extra fog light switch with a blanked-out red lens (polished the emblem off a lens from a hazard switch) for my trunk latch solenoid. I mounted it in the pre-existing cutout for the rear-window defroster switch. This gives two advantages: a clean factory appearance, and the ability to keep the solenoid engaged if I need to apply some pressure to the trunk lid to get it to unlatch (which is a frequent occurrence). It alos lights up when engaged, which I like.

I also used a spare engine lid release cable as a manual "emergency" override with the handle accessible under the left rear fender.
