not looking for judgement or opinions, just simple question about koni front strut housings and what inserts fit

koni obviously, but what about

kyb g series
blistein
other?

Boge

kyb's have cruddy valving for this weight of a car
they are often referred to as "kill yer back"
I'd avoid them on a 914

bilstein and koni's have the reputation of being the best stock valving, performance shocks on these cars

there are racing shocks too... but a different question than your asking.

Are you talking stock 914 struts or 911 struts which I believe came in Koni, Bilstein and Boge.

If they are truly 911 Koni struts then only Koni inserts will fit.

why do the suppliers offer other inserts for 911's (years 78-83) which I thought were all koni strutted cars

I measured kyb inserts and they are identical in measurements to koni inserts - only exception is the kyb's have a "nub" on the bottom of the insert - fit seems ok

I didn't think the SC series had koni struts....

the SC's and Carrera's did have 3.5 spacing but I thought they all came with Boge or something struts

I though the actual koni struts were roughly from about 1970- to 1976-ish years
and only an option on those years (S caliper option)
versus the standard strut with 3inch spacing


John's pictures show the difference well
you can see how the housing becomes larger on the koni just above the mounting point for the spindle... on the others it is the same tube size.
this is why you don't see koni struts with spindle mounting location modifications (the taper)

I run koni struts which are sectioned for a drop
but then race shocks inside to accomodate the modification and give travel to a lowered car.

check the shape of the struts on your car

It's all about the thread pattern on the inserts.

Most 911SC models (the years you specified) came with "Boge" struts. Those later SC Boge struts (black as per the pictures above) have the 3.5" spacing "but" they have a "Boge" thread pattern for the insert.

Koni makes the orange struts you see above. They have a Koni thread pattern so only Koni inserts fit these struts.

Same thing with the green Bilsteins you see above. Bilstein thread pattern and Bilstein inserts.

Because Boge was so prevalent in the SC's (almost all of them), the other manufacturers make replacement inserts for them with the Boge thread pattern so, in a way, they're more desirable for the multitude of insert choices (even if some of those choices are KYB)

079 00 = Boge

What color is it? Are they orange?

I'm finding it in Google searches but not on the factory PET. It should have a manufacturer stamped on it. It appears they "are" Koni from various listings. That would mean Koni inserts.

measure the bolt spacing where the calipers bolt on, and also the see if you can determine the original color

another indicator is to look at the top nut that holds the insert in (its the nut that the shock goes through the middle of)

I believe the fine thread nuts are koni, and the course thread are something else.

see if you can determine what the original color would have been under any of the grime.

Just got Koni sport inserts for my '73 I'm restoring. Paragon has them on sale 20% off.

I'm using '71 T front suspension with Boge struts so you just order the appropriate inserts for what suspension you have. Rears are all the same for any 914.

Made by Koni is stamped on them. Hard to determine the original color.

All that said, If I can fit another insert in and have the matching cap to hold it into the strut, am I good to go?

I guess my question isn't fully understood. I have a set of koni inserts (used), I have a set of KYB inserts new.

The KBY inserts fit fine in the Koni struts. They sit in the tube, the KYB top strut nut fits fine.

The length of both inserts (KYB and KONI) when the pistons are fully extended are the same.

I'm not understanding why it seems most of you are saying I have to use Koni inserts.

I must be missing the point or not understanding something. It just isn't regestering in my head.

it was a well known fact that nobody but koni made koni strut inserts

maybe that has changed though...

however the kyb are well known to be pretty terrible and overly harsh
If they fit you can stick them in and give them a try...
if they are too hard for your taste then you can buy the koni inserts.

Finally got it all sorted out and will be putting koni inserts in.
