Full Version: Bulletproofing 914 drivetrain?

Ok, I'm up against an apx 250hp 2.7. I am thinking just going 914 6 rotors, calipers, hubs, stub axles. Sway away sounds like the place to go for axles, what about cv joints? I think that they are going to be my weakest link to my rear assembly. Is there someone that makes racing vw type cv joints. I know guys with the v8 conversions and big 6's need something different, so someone has to make something. The drag race guys probably eat cv's for breakfast as well. I haven't seen anything on getting away even from 911 stuff. There has to be a better option out there.

I can do that. I have one mounted to my engine right now. I figured eventually I will have to but would start without it so I wouldn't have to fool with hydrolic clutch and high dollar shift rod. Just one more damn thing to find money for.

Early 911 parts(70-72 i think) work and are reasonable priced. I bought hubs, stubs and cv's for $300 for my 3.2 conversion. sway a way axles to fit.

934 cv's I'm sourcing for current project with four x the 250 hp.
These are manufactured in Nevada and used in 1,000 hp sandrails.
Not that expensive compared to Porsche prices biggrin.gif

but you will have to open the 915 box and flip the R&P
there is some machine work involved.
and you can always re-gear your ratio's while your in there.

(or else 5 reverse gears, 1 forward gear)

you are correct - the stock cv is the weak link.

Just an FYI, 915 trannies use a cable clutch. Porsche went to a hydo unit in 1987 with the G35 trans

Also on a 915 you have to determine if it course or fine spline output stubs .

The 930 might be a good choice if you want 4 or less gears.
I think Britian's application is 2 gears?

but for road racing less gears is a detriment
If I had over 400hp, I'd look into a mendola or something before going to a 930. it has its downsides

I believe Eric sells Loebro CV's that are good for 250hp (PMBPerformance).
Or if you have the coin Renegade Hybrids sells CV/Axles as a pair for 699$ rated for 500hp. But as mentioned this simply moves the potential failure point to the 901.

While you're in the 915, get a cnc aluminum side plate cover installed as well.
The stock side plate does not like side thrust loading. Roger at California
Motorsports, Az. has it. If you're not road racing, you are ok with stock.

How are you using this power??? This makes a huge difference in what transmission to use. In order of robustness; 901 - 915 - 930 - Mendiola. Also cost increases with strength, up to and over $10K for a Mendiola depending on what you want.

I reject this as well. I have never had one of my 901 boxes detonate or otherwise fail when used with high HP. None of my 915 or 930 either.

when I lived in VA, I had a buddy out in warrenton that drag raced his 914 with a sbc turbo that put out 400hp or so. maybe more, it pulled front wheels off ground mid way thru 1/8 mile. he could not keep a 901 together. he build a metal girdle for it and cnc'd his our intermediate plate, but it would not hold together. so yes, how you use it matters (SHE SAID : )

clearly britain says 930 is the way to go and andy is happy with his 901 driven with respectfully.

that said, the 930, i'm told is old tech and shifts like shit, well,, like a 901 : )

a mendola can be sequential, but you need a BIG wallet.

915 with wevo (916) style tail cone, behind a 3.6 Varioram.
Lots of torque out of this package, should be just under 300 hp.
Similar transaxle that I use on the biturbo=no problems.
