When I removed these, the slot was facing up. The book says they should be facing down. Which is correct? Does it matter? If facing up is wrong, they have been like that since I installed ceramic lifters about 9 years ago. If there is a way to eff this up I will find it.

Yep, the slots face down....that's where the push rod tube retainers fit into.

IIRC, down. Of course I don't remember what I had for breakfast and all my wrenching has been Suby for 12 month's.
