are they calibrated the same? (early 911 = 914?)

I'm not certain what you're asking, but my '80 SC is marked almost identical to my '74 914. The 911 has an additional line near the zero line, which would be about 10 mph. They are both 30, 60, etc. up to 150 mph.

The speedo drive worm gear is different, even on the 914/6.

They are not very different, and with tire changes, it's almost meaningless.

I am in the process of putting in an electric speedometer from a 911 in my car.
There was a really good thread on how to do it with the 914 trans.
I bought all the components, just don't have time to do it.
The bouncy speedometer and pathetic odometer cable is getting old.

The calibration comes from a combination of the ring/pinion ratio and the factory tire circumference. Most early 911s have the same 7:31 r/p ratio as the 914, and if the tire circumference is about the same they should work as long as the speedo drive turns at the same rate too. If Red-Beard says they didn't, I defer to his expertise. (But did the factory really engineer the speedo angle drive gears around the speedo gauge gears? Seems bass-ackwards.)

It may be close enough to work even if it isn't identical. Hell, how many here have the stock 165SR15 tires on anyway?

i use a 944 speedo and it's about the same off as my original 914 speedo.

Is the 944 speedo cable operated or electric?
If its electric how did you make it work with the 914 trans?

the one i have is cable operated and the 914 speedo-cable fits just fine ...

There is a sender available from VDO to drive the Electronic speedometer. It's a hall effect sender that is driven off the speedo output location on the trans. I made an adapter for mine out of an old angle drive just last night. I have the box and the angle drive adapter at home and I can take some pictures tonight. I have not figured out the wiring diagram for it yet, but I will.

The above is what I bought but it still requires an adapter to change it from 16 pulses a second to 8.
I bought the ERA controller to solve the problem.

The 911 Speedo came in a more expensive package

I honestly don't know. I have the box at home, but I am at work.

If it does require an adapter, then I can get one. I have the link to the site you are talking about, but North Hollywood told me it would drive the 911 speedo direct, with just an adapter cable.


NOTE: I have not tried it yet. I will check it out and let you know. A test rig in the wife's 914 will tell me if It will work or not.
