I know the G50 is long...
Sammy
I don't know what it would take to flip the r/p on a G-50 so I won't comment on that, but based on what I've read the water cooled 3.6 is very wide and would require some serious modifications to make it fit.
For most people is makes way more sense to install the air cooled version.

I'm by no means an expert, so don't pin me down on anything but...
From what I understand, you can't flip the r/p on a G50, but you can mount the box upsidedown (needs lubrication mods IIRC)

The watercooled sixes are to wide to fit into a 914
Not enuf room between the inner suspension ears, so some serious fabbing will be required

Jason here is working on a Boxster engine/tranny conversion with Brad
I believe they were planning on using the Boxster rear susp as well...

Sounds like the perfect excuse to cut out the rear suspension and put in something better. Boxster, 993, 928...

Quite a few kit-car outfits using flipped G50's. I think you can get the run-it-flipped parts from the Ultima guys for like $250.

There is a guy in the local PCA race club running a 993 engine and G50 in his teen...it's said he has $75K (canadian) into the car. IPB Image

Jeroen,
I email Jason frequently about our conversions. We live within 3 miles of each other so I see the scope of work.

Sammy,
I've read on prior posts that the G50 must be flipped to correct the R&P but since the bolt pattern is not radially symetrical, machining is necessary. Plus shortening it should be done.

I think someone in Canada was attempting the G50 conversion...

I guess this transplant wouldn't make sense if a/c 3.6's and modified 915's are a better choices.

Thanks

Can't flip the ring and pinion in a G-50. The case is like the old snail shell aluminum case 901. What you CAN do is bolt a boxster trans to the 996 engine. It's a complete bolt on, and turns the correct direction.

Personally, I would stick wth Air cooled 911 motors for a 914. A3.8RSR 993 motor would be sweet in a 914.

maybe it was a boxster trans....I've only see pic's of the car.

I was reading an article in 911 & Porsche World....the British rag. As I understood it, Porsche does not supply parts for either the engine or trans of 996s and Boxsters. If you have
a problem (even a rear main seal...a frequent occurance, apparently) they swap the engine out....$$$$$ if not under warantee. Same with the trans.

Jim Cole is the one who started that post. It just so happends he lives here in Victoria and I've autoX'ed with him.

I don't think he ever got the thing to run right, he was always yelling something at it! ha ha

Anyways I am looking at the same thing, I've got a line on a race ready G50 and want to slide it in behind a 3.2 for my 914.

I could get into contact with Jim and see if he ever managed to get it working right.

I suspect not, because there is a C4 G50 trans with broken case mounts rolling around with one of the other local Porsche Club members. How many C4 G50's are out there and are in Victoria none the less! IPB Image

I don't think that's true
The 996 uses the same tranny's as the last aircooled cars (G50)
And as far as I know, the Boxster tranny won't fit an air cooled engine

I thought the twin turbo, the GT2 and GT3 use 964 based blocks and have special transmissions which bolt up to the engines, if so these will not fit regular 996 engines since the blocks are different.......
Jeroen
you're prolly right... The GT3 and turbo do have 964 casings...
I'm just gonna shut up now and read what others have to say IPB Image

Jim emailed back and said he never completed the project and sold the drivetrain. He mentioned his tube frame car is also for sale...
