Hi everyone. I got my first 914 this last weekend. IPB Image She is a 75 1.8. I would like to thank Rich and everyone else at HP House. Now its time to sort through the problems. Not many yet. First. When I de-accelerate, There is popping or sputtering. Could this be the exhaust? The cat was cut out. Or is it the De-accel valve? Or something vaccum related? Second. On a very steep grade starting out in first. There was smoke from under the engine. I imediatly stopped and drove home. Havnt driven on any hills after that. Seems like the clutch hasnt changed. Is my car just way to underpowered for this? Or do I need to be looking at a new clutch very soon? Mabey I will post some pictures soon. IPB Image

If the clutch didn't slip on the hill (engine rpm comes up, but speed doesn't), it could be a leaking push rod tube or valve cover gasket dropping oil on the heat exchangers.

Yeh, I'm an optimist.

good luck with the new car! I dont think these had a cat did they? THe exhaust is so short that it kinda pops and such on decel..kinda common.

Definetly didnt smell like oil. I know the smell of grinding steel. Didnt the 75 and 76 cars have smog eqiupment like cats?

welcome, you find all the help you need here

75 and 76 cars had a cat installed from the factory for all cars sold in California.

Hi welcome to the club I think you will like it here. Oh yea if you ever get to thinking about putting a 928 engine in it Don't. Go with a 6 or SBC or a Flux Capacitor its got to be easier. IPB Image

welcome to the asylum!

re. the pops on decel: get under the car and look for rusted your exhaust. this is the number one cause of backfires (or, more accurately, after-fires).

re. the smoke -- the clutch was slipping or not?

post those pics!!

I had burning oil on my heat exchangers. Not burnt oil coming via the exhaust or bad rings/valves etc. I actually hade a huge oil like by the oil cooler....spraying oil onto the heat exchanges...and eewwww what a stink. Smelled like something burning...almost electrical. Go under the car and see if one side of your heat exchanges are really gunked with oil...and if you see alot of fresh oil somewhere.

a slipping clutch smells like russel-sprouts IPB Image
I don't think I've ever seen a clutch actually smoke though...

oh and...

Smells like clutch! They should make a clutch flavored air freshener! They could have slipping clutch, oil burning on HX, leaking gas fire, oh and rusty battery tray! You would plug it in to the wall socket and....well maybe not IPB Image

It may smell like clutch, but I bet it tastes like chicken..............

OK, so I plan to get the car on jacks this weekend. I will check out the exhaust. I suppose a peice of tube had to be welded in to make up for the lack of cat. What exhaust systems should I consider? I hear that if I backdate (pre 75) I can pick up horsepower. I would also have to change the heat exchangers? If the exhaust system is realy rusty, couldnt emissions leak through the heat exchanger? Scary thought. BTW. I think I will stick with my T4 for awhile.

yes, it's possible that if the HE's are rusted through you could get carbon monoxide in the cockpit. ask me how i know IPB Image this shouldn't be the case, though.

you may just need a new muffler. if that's the case, only 75-6 style (obviously) will fit with your current HE's. this late model muffler style also requires a cat or cat by-pass tube. i have a cat laying around here that you can have if you want (no by-pass tube).

the 75-76 HE's are the culprit in the late model exhaust (though i don't think they're as bad as some people seem to think), and you can back date the whole-shebang if you want, picking up a few hp. SS HE's and a bursch is the most common setup.

or, after asking yourself what you want to do with the car first, you may opt for a header system. you'll lose all heat to the cabin in this case, but you'll pick up some power. $400-$1000. you can always put this on your next T4 engine, also.

Set the emergency brake...start the car.....put it in 4th gear.....raise the rpms like you would starting out and let the clutch out.....if the engine dies, the clutch is prolly good....if it continues running, well.......

Jared (Drifter Jay) showed up at the first WCC05 meeting belowing smoke...it wasn't oil...it was clutch...took it apart soon after that....nothing of the friction disk lining was left.
