Here are a couple of photos from one of the 914's that team Brumos races.
I think it's a Hewland trans. It must be expensive???
I like the pedals and I guess if you run this system you will need a hydraulic clutch.

I agree...
but if your getting invited to rennsport and monterey.. who cares about PCA...
I can't really afford to leave state, so PCA participation mattered a lot to me.

That car has been runnning the sequential box in HSR for quite some time. Rumor has it that it cost around $30K.
Bob Snodgrass is my hero.
That's why guys like me don't win the lotto. I'd walk into Brumos with $200K and say build me one like yours.

That is not one of the orginal Brumos cars. That car was built much later. Jon Lowe's website shows all the original Brumos cars.

have you seen underneath too?
what do they have on it for a motor mount.
there is some type of (?quick-six) black bar type brace or mount in the picture.

Yes the original Brumos #59 still has the old style trans, I just think that it is neat to see how this team is constantly improving on this model.
Here is a better picture of the engine bar you requested

Why does a "real" six have a crossbar engine mount?
brant
Feb 7 2005, 06:13 PM
even those the mounts for the bar are not stock -4 mounts....
my guess is that its not a real -6
its a conversion.
I also don't think this is all that rare in america in the 70's.
I bought a homemade motor mount a while back that had been raced in the early 70's in scca. the mount had been sitting on a shelf of a shop for years. Guy said they made it up when they converted a -4 car. I think alot of the real early scca cars may have been built from 4's.

How is the transmission mounted to the chassis?
Any more detail on the cage?
Great pics Martin

Those are certainly not 4 mounts on the sides. My guess is this 914 started life as a 4 or the one bolt 914-6 mount (even beefed up) didn't hold up? If you think about it, people are putting 300hp V8's and the stock 4 mounts are holding up fine. Never heard of one seperating from the body of the car. But I have heard if you don't beef up a stock 914-6 mount, they can bend and pull away from the body of the car.

The Hewland you show looks like a LD200 . It runs about 6-9k plus the new input shaft and some other small changes. It can be made to shift sequentially , but it is very expensive 3-5 k on top of trans cost.
I use a Hewland in my 914-6 E Production car. But have an older Mark 8 casing with mark 5 gearsets. This is very close to the 914 transmission. For those of you not familiar with this trans, it uses a modified type 1 VW casing and has dog ring style gear engagement so it shifts much faster and gears are reasonable and available. It uses the same bolt spacing as a Porsche 914. So far the mods to make it work are as follows:
Engine/Trans mount plate, Did not have enough room to mount flywheel , might be able to skip this with a custom flywheel.
Tilton 5.5 Clutch
Saab Hydraulic release bearing custom machined
Shift tower and shift linkage
Custom drive axles
Other wise it bolts right up! LOL!!!!!!
FP competitor Ed Givler also has one, and has had good luck with his.

don't know why I didn't notice before.
this is a 72 or newer chassis.
the dash picture clearly shows the round ventillation hole in the behind dash structure....
could of been a 72 -6 but I doubt it.
Its a nice conversion though

I think I can answer some of the questions about this car. Bob Snodgras (owner of Brumos) and I grew up in the same town, both now live in Florida, still talk occasionally and I have sat in this car during a visit to Bob's museum.
The car has a Hewland BUT it is NOT sequential. Bob seems to enjoy the rumors that fly around his cars and somehow become urban legend.
The floor has been extended downward to accomodate Bob's size ( he is quite an imposing guy)
This is not an original car, but one of a series of replica cars made by Brumos. The serial numbers have been changed to something like B914-6GTR01 etc. the R being replica.
