How do I connect the piece in the photo which attaches to the end of the long shift rod under the car to the ball shift rod on the transmission?

The deldrin or whatever bushing inside the metal has a diameter of 16mm and the ball on the transmission is a little over 18mm. The meta piece in the picture with the bushing doesn't want to go over the ball even with a lot of force. Do I just try to force it on - hammer?

Bushing goes on ball first, all alone
Then metal piece goes over bushing.

It expands enough to fit on,the ball, a good smack with the heal of yr hand should do it

Large channel lock pliers also work.

You can also boil the bushing in water and it will pop on while hot.

You should add a little grease inside the bushing before fitting.
