Yeah, I am pretty sure the ones in the door are M6 as well. At least, I don't remember having to buy a different box of Allen-head bolts when I replaced the fasteners.

OK - I am no longer confused.

I knocked one of the original cage (captive) nuts out of my early '72 door. It is an unmolested car that I have owned since 1978 (2nd owner).

I took it to the hardware store 2 blocks away to use their nut/bolt gauge and it is indeed an M5. Definitely not M6. BTW - a SAE 10-32 worked as well but was a little loose.

Keep in mind that my car is an early MY72 and a lot of things changed that year. It could be that they went to M6 at some point.

Perhaps you were thinking of the tool required to remove the screws? It may very well be a 5mm Allen wrench (hex key), but the threaded part of the bolt is 6mm. So it's an M6 screw.

The cage nut will not thread on to a 6mm bolt at the hardware store. It will thread onto a 5mm.

Looks to be fairly common. Used on computer server racks.

I think I'll buy a bag of 50 for $18. Keep 10 and get the other 40 over to Mark at 914Rubber.

Found this in my searching. I'm thinking soft HF screwdriver and bend the tip without snapping it off.

Stopped by Ace Hardware, they only carry 6mm *1.0.

If you look at PET, main group 8, sub-group 7, illustration 807-05, items 11 and 19 are definitely called out as 5mm screws. Granted, it's difficult to tell exactly where these screws go from the illustrations in PET, there is, however, no 6mm hardware specified anywhere in this sub-group, which includes the door panels and arm rests.

It's hard to tell the difference between 5 and 6mm hardware sometimes. The one that drove me nuts for a long time was the nut that secures the strap that holds in the glove box. I kept finding it loose and tightening it up, only to find it loose again in a short time. Turns out, it's a 5mm stud and a 6mm nut will go on and even tighten, up to a point. But a little more force will cause the nut to jump a thread or two, loosening the strap again. I finally replaced the stud with a 6mm one.
