Hoping for some advice.

I am considering buying this car

I asked for a shot of the longs without the rocker covers

The longs look good some slight surface rust.

However the jack-points have some rust and what looks like a crack.
How big of a job would this be to fix?

Would it be costly

Should I buy this car even with the rust on the jack-points?

I already agreed on a price verbally, the owner promised no rust on the longs

We exchanged emails agreeing to the price

Later I asked him for pics of the longs and to his surprise there was rust

Should I still buy it but ask for a lower price??

Simple fix, and if you want one of these car you need to learn to weld anyways.

That's just the beginning, you will encounter more rust/work when you remove the top.

I guess the right side looks worse.

Find someone from the forum to inspect the car with/for you.

That is the drivers side. The passenger side is where the nightmares reside.

Have a screwdriver handy... start poking the usual (car) places...

Silver car resprayed red? Definitely look for signs of paint covering up possible issues.

I'm betting the rust on the jackpoint 'cover', a similar amount of rust on the longs behind it. It could be minor but warrants removing the jack cover, or at least cutting the bottom half off to see what's behind there. Make an offer with that work in mind.

Also look hard for rust
-in the hell hole (under battery)
-floor pan, especially behind the seats
-the longs inside the car
-suspension ears
-trunks
-around windshield
-trunks
-ah hell, the whole damn car. smile.gif

Not sure about that ,the drain hole in the jack receiver is blocked,inside will be toast.

We agreed on a price over the phone with the assurance there was no rust on the rockers

Afterwards I asked for a shot of the rockers without the cover on

Should I ask for a reduced price??

If you want a 1-2 year project, buy it.

If you want a driver, look for another car.

The rust you see is very typical and just the tip of the iceberg.

What's your budget and what's the agreed purchase price?

That passenger side Long is really banged up a bit. The lower "shoulder" should run parallel with the bottom of the pinch weld flange if you look at it from the side. I'm seeing dents and bulges--possible road hazard stuff or jacking errors but they merit a closer look. Do some poking and make sure that's all metal and not some filler from a prior bad repair.

The car is currently in Northern California not Midwest



Agreed on price was 7900 before rust issues were discovered

Wondering why this would take 1-2 years

Yes good catch

The car was in a fender bender with dents in the long but was repaired years ago

Getting pics of the rear floor pan and entire bottom

Doing that exact repair right now. Isn't too bad. Sheet metal was $15. Should take a weekend but I am not going full speed, and touching up some other areas, so probably two weekends.

Need to see some good pics of the battery tray, the area under it up to the firewall, and underside engine area and rear of the floor plans. It's worth it to take a good long look.

Enough rust to warrant breaking out the welder for the longs (and likely other spots) AND a previous accident warrants an offer much less than $8k. I'd start at $4k, without knowing anything else, and depending on the condition of the engine, tranny and the rest of the car, that may be too high.

It'll cost a lot if you ever want to correct the bad paint job, too.

Given the limited info we have now, I'd pass on this one.

The current owner repaired them for me what a great guy!

On wow. Not the way I am doing mine!
IMO the jack plate is superficial, unless you use it.
Its the rocker behind that probably needs attention.
Looks sorta like lipstick on a pig.

I see your point

He did cut out the rusted area
The backside looked pretty good with no rust through

My plan is to use Eastwood green stuff internally for the entire rocker
then eastwood rust encapsulator on all exterior surfaces

I learned or should I say that I surmised, during my repair that the hole in the jack support is there to drain water. But what it does is let dirt and water in. Once the dirt is in and packed, the water is absorbed and starts the rust process from the inside.

So it should be on the maintenance list to take a punch and break up the dirt in the jack support once a year. You have either eliminated the access point for the dirt and water, or eliminated a way to get it out by welding a solid plate.

And maybe should drill a hole in your new plate and force the "rust mort" in there. Cause the rust was on the long side too.

I did a similar repair, but left the hole and used a similar product to rust mort. An inner channel spray paint from Eastwood on the inside.

(EDIT) I just realized that in your photo, you can barely see the hole I mentioned. It is on the bottom left of the "pyramid". This photo may be an item that will work on either side. Hole on the top too.

I did leave out a few pictures

That is probably why some folks are making negative statements

Sequence of repair:

1 Grind off all rust
2 Treat inner and outer pyramid with rust stop
3 cut out rust
4 weld new plate in
5 cover with undercoating

This was the exact procedure I was going to follow.
The only additional steps I see:

1 Fog inside main long and inner long with Eastwood green rust stop
2 Spray Eastwood Rust arrestor on bottom of longs and a few sections under the car

I do not see the issue here

Nice! Has less rust in the jack ports than mine and I'm guessing less than it's gonna have living in Detroit! Enjoy!
