What distributor would be best to use for my build? I am building a 2.7l using JE 9.5:1 Pistons, E- cams and carbs. Simple is good for me. My car is going to be used for spirited street driving.
rudedude
Which case?
tornik550
2.7l- 7R
rudedude
I built essentially the same motor but used mod S cams from dougherty. I was able to find a 2.7RS distributor. the combination works quite well. I will try to find bosch numbers if you like otherwise have yours recurved.

1/ Get the stock dizzy rebuilt and re-curved.

2/ Build a megajolt jr. (Ford EDIS)

3/ Get a MS and run ignition only. This one gives you the option to run FI in the future.

4/ Clewett Engineering has a crankfire ignition system.

One option that won't work is locking out the dizzy advance and running the MSD programmable, the 911 cap and rotor doesn't have long enough legs to keep it in phase.

Here are a couple of candidates if you can find one:

67-68 S Distributor

Isn't the shaft a different size for an aluminum case early distributor? (67s) vs a 7R dist. shaft

Guess you haven't seen what a yellow tag dizzy is going for lately biggrin.gif
For one in that shape I'd bet he'd be 3/4 of the way to a full MS fuel injection system installed.
Peashooter
The early distributors will not fit into the later 7R case. I built a similar engine, my stock dist. is going out to Woods for recurve.
tornik550
Approximately how much does it cost for a recurve?

Call Jerry Woods Entr. 408 369 9607

There's another guy in Detroit, Mich that does it too but I can't recall his comp name.

Is the guy in MI IAE Inc.?

That's the guy in Mich. Barry is who I spoke with.
He won't give you a total/hard $ amount until he looks over your dizzy first.
Nice guy and seams to know his stuff.

Although prices will vary

Anyone care to throw a rough cost number out?
Also curious about the recurve costs, even if its a range?

That's the pricing answer you're looking for. It could be an easy fix for little money or a bigger issue for more money. Always watch out for people that price before seeing any porsche part in person and seeing what it really needs.
tornik550
Looking for a general idea on price. I know that no one can tell me an exact price. Am I looking around $100, $500, $1000, $1000000?
rudedude
I believe when I was thinking of that route 8-10 years ago it was like $300
tornik550
Has anyone ever tired one of these distributors? Cost about $750. I currently do not have a distributor that will fit in my car so I would have to buy a core, rebuild it and then have it recurved. I would probably be close to (or more) to $750.

I've heard the 123 ignitions are just to replace a stock-ish curve.
With a hot rodded non-factory engine a recurve from someone that knows your specs or a custom crank-fire setup would be best.
mepstein
I have one out of a running car for $250 + ship. Boss said its the right one for your car. If you buy it and for whatever reason don't want it, you can return it. Mark
mskala
I bought one done by one of the knowledgable guys for about $500 about 5
years back.

Unless you know something that I don't about the engine setup, seems like the
easiest and best curve would be the one from 2.2L 'E' and 'S' (same).
GeorgeRud
When I built up my 2.7, I ended up using Richard Clewitt's Electromotive setup. You can occasionally find used systems as well, but I think crank fired setups are the best way to go with a custom engine as you can easily reset the curve as needed electronically.

Otherwise, Jerry Woods would be a great source for recurving the distributor.

tornik550: That sounds like the deal to take!
If you pass, I may have to snag it from mepstein for my similar build.

Nathan - it's sold but you can always give me a ring for whatever you need.

When I was looking about 2 years ago I was quoted in the $600 range.

Then this fell into my lap evilgrin.gif

Looks great, is it a JB unit? Those12 cylinder distributor looks real cool, especially if you want the old RSR look. Does it turn clockwise or counter clockwise? Any updates with those web cams you bought from me?

That is a Jarvis/ Patrick Motorsports dizzy and wires, the trigger is MSD and the cap is a Jaguar 12 cylinder. I have the MSD and 2 MSD high vibration coils.
I thought it looked cool but once in a 914 you can barely see it. wink.gif

Your cams cost me a bit more than I hoped, I didn't realize a 993 cam set used a different sprocket set-up and the adjustment tools are over $1000 alone.
So I had my crank grinder cut off the power steering drive then submersion weld and grind the sprocket end square. Cutting the woodruff key took some head scratching, but I found a dremel disc that fit my air die grinder and I trimmed it to fit. I indexed it on my lathe and cut the woodruff key. Now it accepts the stock 911 timing sprocket.
