SO do you think that Thornton never sold 914s, that they would have been sold only by Travale?

I think that is probably the case.

Bill Yates definitely sold 914s in San Juan Capistrano CA. Cotton Goff was a Volkswagen dealership. There was a Porsche dealer located next to Cotton Goff in Buena Park called Park Porsche, where my Dad bought an Audi. I think the two dealerships had the same owner but I'm not sure.
JeffBowlsby
Cotton Goff also sold Porsches according to the license plate frames I have on the webpage.

Driving down south memorial in Tulsa in 1973. Saw a red car sitting outside. Thought "what kind of car is that"? Turned around, went inside, took a test drive, and bought it on the spot. Bahia red 1.7 with appearance group and pedrinis. $5050.00. Still have it

No, I have Sierra Porsche listed as the Riverside 914 dealer. Did Colley sell them too?
RARE 6
Johnson-Bozzani Porsche in downtown Phoenix. Bought the -6 new there on 9-14-71. Put the frame back on this summer after completing the redo.

Does anyone have any info on Rudi’s in Burlingame? Have asked a few guys from the area older than me and they all never heard of it. Of course everyone knows Neufield and Dave Rasmussen but no knowledge of Rudi’s.
Sm914650
Also, was Rector not selling 914s in Burlingame yet? Figure maybe they didn’t start til the late 70s possibly. Maybe my Bay Area folks can help me get some answers!

That is the same dealer that sold Betty's 74 originally.

Both Wes Hildreth and Ed Mayo worked there.

*i think i can answer my own question, that Rector was transitioned from Neufeld Burlingame, and figure it wasn’t around yet for 914 sales. Guess i have to take my Rector frame off my 73 sad.gif

Can anyone confirm if Neufeld in San Carlos or Neufeld in Burlingame was the primary 914 distributor? See some 914 ads on Google for San Carlos.
Also if anyone has any idea what Rudi’s Burlingame is or turned into, would love to know.

Out here on the right coast my 1973 914 was delivered by ALGAR Porsche/Audi before it became widely more recognizable as Algar Ferrari.
Al Garthwaite ran the two dealerships in different locations between Rosemont and Paoli

Humphrey VW Porsche in Hayward, California, sold 914's and Porsche 911's and 912's from the same showroom in the late 1960's to early 1970's. They even had a Parts and Service Department that stayed open until 9:00PM at night for a while! You won't find that at a dealership these days.

I want to add that Niello Porsche is the oldest continuously operating Porsche dealership in Northern California. They are now located in Rocklin, California, but originally started out in Sacramento, California. Wes Lasher Volkswagen was the original VW Dealer in the Sacramento area and then Niello bought into the company and it became Lasher-Niello VW Porsche; then they split up and Wes Lasher was bought out and it became Niello Porsche. I believe that the Niello family has been selling Porsches since 1956. Lasher's family continued selling VW's until 2022 when they sold their VW and other (Subaru, Jeep, Chrysler, etc) dealerships.

Mine was initially sold at Towson Valley Motors in Maryland, and looks like it was resold there at least once more from records in the owner's manual.

Whitey came from Vasek Polak. Having lived a few blocks from them when I lived in LA, I had some sentimental attachment to them.

I now have a VP frame holder for Whitey, and my Macan has one too!

There's a guy on eBay who sells them, not cheaply, and they are exactly the same as those old dealer ones. I matte cleared both of mine to try to deter any rust on that potmetal frame. They look really nice.

In 1971 I moved to Hermosa Beach, being the surf dude I was. (still am) I moved to a street a few blocks from the sand called 1st place the apartment was a few hundred feet off of Pacific Coast Highway.

I would walk to the laundromat up on PCH weekly. On these walks there was this Porsche car dealer between my apartment and the laundry. This dealer was the infamous "Vasek Polak" dealership. Vasek always had on display in the showroom many various race cars they had campaigned 550, 904, 906, 908, 910, 917 and others.

On one of my trips I noticed a 908/2 race car sitting right next to a brand new 914-6, I had to go in to look at this. Sitting side by side the cars were very similar, wheels out on the corners, mid engine, low etc. It was clear to me the 914-6 was a race car for the street... There and then began my love for 914's I also recall seeing the window sticker price, I think it was $5600 (?) and thought OMG I will never be able to afford a car that expensive!

So to answer your question Vasek Polak Porsche sold 914s early on.

Cool collection of pictures Jeff...

I wonder if the Vasek Polak is the most sought after and reproduced license plate frame there is?

I think Giganti Porsche + Audi did the 914s from the start. One of their old mechanics owns the place that services my car, I'll ask him.

Scala O'Brien Chicago - this is where my 914 was sold in 1975. It appears they ended up in a legal battle with PCNA when, having been promised sole rights to Porsche sales in the Chicagoland area, they took PCNA to court when they discovered a second Porsche dealership was to open in Chicago...

I remember being a sophomore in high school (1969) and going to Carlsen Porsche/Audi on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco with my parents. I didn't have my drivers license yet. They bought an Audi Super-90. I remember sitting in a 914 on their showroom floor. Must have been the first model year for the 914. That started a love affair to this day. Not sure if it was a 914-6 of not but I do recall how it was green and had what I thought was a sloppy shifter. I believe they closed up shop in SF and moved down the peninsula to Redwood City then Palo Alto. I'm still looking for a Carlsen San Francisco plate frame. shades.gif

I'm from a military family. We were stationed at Fort Ord from 1957 to 1960. Got to know the Westers. Dad wanted to buy an Elva Courier he had on his lot but was too tall to fit with his hat if the top was up. That was (is?) a military reg. So he bought a Bugeye Sprite that had been Don's sisters car (as I recall). The Sprite was my first car when I started college. My brother was on Don's pit crew for his California races (356, RS60, 904, 906, and Genie). Those were the days!

My car was originally sold out of Tom Carsten's Autohaus in Tacoma.

I was going to purchase my brand new 914 2.0 at Max Dial Porsche+Audi on La Brea ave. In Inglewood. Bought it from Downtown L.A. P+A instead.
Got a better deal, a great couple hours Test Drive in the empty (back then) downtown streets too !
My salesman was Heinz Brinkmann, who was also a TV actor. If you remember "Combat" with Vic Morrow aka Sarge, was Brinkmann's nemesis .
Marty

I remember "Combat" Marty. Hope they rebroadcast that series someday.

I have an Aero Porsche Audi in Inglewood...were there two including Max Dial P-A?

Jeff, one of my C+C buddy's says that Max Dial P+A /Inglewood, CA. then became Atlas P+A. Atlas was the brainchild of Mike Salta who owned the Pontiac dealership in nearby Culver City. The dealership name "Atlas" is Salta spelled in reverse biggrin.gif The Inglewood dealership in current times is a couple of storefronts + a big lot .

I read through the whole post and didn't see anything about Anderson in San Jose. I was in the place in 1970 and they had a brand new 914/6 and one 911 on the showroom floor. I ended up buying the 911.

Anderson is on my swag list in San Jose.
Later became Anderson Behel in Santa Clara.

Didn't see Alpine Porsche-Audi mentioned in the thread...

Alpine Porsche-Audi in Colorado Springs was originally owned by Duane Mentzer; he was also involved with the formation of Alpine Mountain Region around 1975. I think they sold 914s from the start--an upperclassman in my Squadron at the AF Academy had a blue '71. IIRC, Alpine sold 80+ to my classmates in May 1972.
