I think it's to stop spark plug static on older radios. Forgotten what it's called since I haven't seen something like it in years.

.47 microfarad capacitor that is used to shunt any AC voltage that is on the DC voltage to ground. This is used to suppress radio interference from the ignition system on the coil?

Thanks for your help. Am I correct to think this shunt is no longer needed with newer radios?
