Hi,

Can the pushrod tubes and oils seals be replaced from underneath with the engine still in the car?
It looks like if I took off the exhaust I might have enough room?

Thanks all.

Steve

No, I don't think so. You have to lower the engine.

Why do you want to take the pushrods out?
SLITS
Yes it can be done .... not that hard. I've done it a couple of times.

I don't remember if I removed the HE or not.

Once you remove the rocker assemblies, you can get the pushrods out. When removing the rocker assemblies from the head, I use 5/16" bolts to hold the assemblies together. Push them through when sliding the rocker assemblies off the studs.

Removing the pushrod tubes without crushing them can be a problem. I used a pair of channel locks to twist and pull.

yes you can.

You need to pull the rocker covers, then the rockers.
Then you can pull each pushrod tube out and tip it in place to replace the seals.
At that point you can get the push RODs out.

You cannot completely remove the pushrod tubes.
Some of them (maybe all) will hit the suspension ear.

But you CAN replace all of the seals without removing the tubes completely.

There you go. Thanks for the correction.

I tried a long time ago to pull the rod out without the tubes coming out, so now I know. Thanks.

I'm getting a lot of oil leaking by. The car hadn't been started in 33 year but its running now and what was a small leak seems to have gotten much worse.
Its dripping onto the exhaust to the point where its starting to smoke.
I think some is also from the valve cover but it appears to be really bad at the end of the push rods.

So can i just replace the seals?

Thank again.
