Got these starting to come together.
Mikey914
Thanks there was another that I mentioned I would be making the bushings as apparently they were not available and there. The ones being made were not using bearing bronze like factory so I stepped up and got the correct material. Made the follower like the 914 version and also the puck for the 911 version.

Looking at providing a service on an exchange basis. Or just selling parts. but will be doing a tutorial.

From what I can see there are 3 different versions of this rack

Progress made. We are documenting how we need to do the rebuild procedure and finishing up the new boot tooling.

I'm happy with the new oil bronze bushings we made, and just need to put a few together to make sure we can provide a repeatable consistent process.

We did obtain a Porsche factory tool to assemble these.

Ready to send you my steering rack Mark. PM me.
Mikey914
If this works the way we plan. WE will try to have one of each 3 types in stock on hand and do an exchange keeping your down time to a minimum.
mb911
What a cool service.. What's your price point?
Mikey914
Parts an labor should be about $200. Just need to add up the costs and time it takes.

Tooling for boot is done

Mark,

Do you plan on offering a DIY kit for those of us who would attempt to rebuild their own? Cost?
Mikey914
Still compiling the parts. We will offer you the parts for those that want to. It does have some very specific rebuild instructions and torque values that we plan to adhere to. Also the fixture sets the angles for the ends, but I don't see any reason it can't be done as a DIY project.

Is this for 914 only? What about a 911/912 rack?

Thanks

David

They should be the same

911 / 912 also, but as they are slightly different may need to rebuild yours. There are 3 variations to these 911 / 912 is a little more unique, but basically the same.
Harpo
That would be awesome Mark and your estimate of $200 seems fair. There is a guy on the other coast who is charging a stupid amount for a rebuilt rack. Please let me know when your ready.

Thanks

David
Mikey914
Will do. The CHT project bumped this out a week, but I'll be back on this this next week.
We have enough in to get started now.
walterolin
I'm in for one.
Harpo
Mark is this up and running yet? Can I send you my rack?

Thanks

David
Mikey914
Actually starting up this next week. Matt is freeing up some time for me I will be costing these to figure out time. Good news is I have all 3 and can do on an exchange with a steep core charge (I need to get them back so I have to make it worthwhile for you to do so.
More pics and info soon.

man this is perfect timing! I just disassembled my rack yesterday to rebuild.
I put in a big order for the lenses and carpet kit; will have to call you and add on the parts needed for rebuild. beerchug.gif
Harpo
I sent mine in so Mark can perform his magic
Mikey914
Yes yours and matts will be the 1st 2.
jmitro
haven't rec'd a response from your website contact form.

Is this service available? Cost and turnaround time?
Or do you offer the parts as a kit for DIY?
Wayne
Hi Mark

I just sent you a PM and would like to get mine rebuilt

Thanks, Wayne
Mikey914
Been a little busy actually working on an oddball 911 version. We have some that are stripped down and are starting to build these and can do an exchange basis or rebuild yours is you want. Exchange we are about 2 weeks out from being able to open up the service and ship (we are starting to build up a few).

If you want yours rebuilt it will take a little longer to turn around. We are looking at a $300 core (why so much? we want them back).
With a serviceable core we can do these at $220+ shipping. A little more than 1st planned, but cleaning these up takes a little more time. We then buff the internals to look for any pitting or damage.

Here's some pics from the one I'm just about finished with.
Would have been more impressive if we had more before pics
Mikey914
A few more
914Sixer
How much with out the spacers and eyeball ends? You do not need them if you are going turbo tie rods?
Mikey914
$200 without the ends $185 without the end flanges. You do have to provide them as part of the core if you expect to get them. back. The same is true for the bellows retaining bands.
ConeDodger
Nice! I may even sneak a 240Z rack in and see if you notice! blink.gif
jmitro
Awesome, will be sending mine in.
Mark Henry
What would be real cool is to somehow add a grease nipple to the bottom bearing.
I don't think you could do this to the top bearing, but it's almost always the bottom bearing that fails anyways.
Mikey914
Would be possible, but with the boots intact these tend to not need much maintance.
euro911
The refurbished unit looks great, Mark beerchug.gif
Mikey914
Finally complete, then found out he wanted turbo tie rods.
No big deal.

We did make the new rubber bushings for the eyes on the end. As well as the new bellows and internals. As well as the puck we had made and the sleeves hardware and even the special washer. These item are not part of the rebuild but can be included easily.

Turned out pretty good. Spent the day putting together the protocol for the rebuild. We will also be setting up a higher core charge to encourage returns, but can include a prepaid label to make returns easy. The service will depend on getting cores back. One hear or there ok, but we need to keep these moving in bulk. we have 5 that we are tearing down now and 3 that we are working on.

We are ready to start moving on these and open up the flood gates this next week.
Thanks to all for their patience.
McMark
Nice job on the rebuild and getting yourselves a lightbox! Looks amazing.

Will a DIY kit be available?
mb911
Mikey(Mark) is there a kit now available for these?
Mikey914
Actually we will do these off the shelf and do a core charge to encourage exchange. Building up a stock pile now but will open the gates up Friday to all.

We have found that there are about 5 variations on these, so to keep it simple it's best to do as a service.

They are not really hard to to, but you have to return them to factory spec which means a jig, so easiest to just do it here.
