Hi there, it's been a while since I posted. I will be getting my car back tomorrow or the next day, RUST FREE! Being 17 years old, I worked two jobs for the last six months and realized I'll actually have money left over for rims! I'm debating whether I'll do a 5 lug conversion, or stick with the 4 lug. Anyone post what you've got, right now fuchs(replicas of course) are at the top of my list, but I want to see other ideas. Thanks and have a nice day! Here's my 71, only 90k miles! Finally coming together

Boxster Wheels

I like the boxster rims a lot, to me it almost makes the car look 20 years newer

Those look great on there you can't go wrong with the 4 lug Fuchs tho!

4 bolt Fuchs. Hit the recessed face with 1500 grit. Then the outer face wth 3000 grit and polishing compound. Then I sprayed the whole wheel with clear coat wheel paint, masked off the outer face and sprayed the recessed again with matte clear coat wheel paint.

This picture does not do this car justice! Saw it at Okteenerfest, and my eye keep going back to it. wub.gif

These are fake Fuchs on the green car. The wheel pic are 7in Fuchs on my current 914. I'm partial to the 5-lug look on the 914 as the 4-lug reminds me too much of the car's VW heritage and speed. At least with 5-lug it looks like it could go fast. driving.gif

When I bought my car it had Performance wheels 7x16, tires were 205/55ZR16 Riken Raptors:

I have always loved the look of the 914-6 cars with Fuchs. So I had Harvey Weidman restore a set of 6x15 Fuchs (I know the original 914-6 wheels were 14" but I thought there would be more tire choices in the 15"). Tires are Goodyear Eagle GT 205/60R15's. I'm pleased with the result:

Five lug Fuchs doll any car up. Even a car that is in the process of being fixed up. They just look right on the car.

Didn't the same guy who designed the 914 design the Fuchs five lug wheel?

What would've been a great help with this thread would've been the tire sizes that folks ran with these wheels...I have a set of the Mahle 4-lug wheels, with 195/60s on it now, and was wondering if I could run 205/55s or even 205/50s without any rubbing issues?

You can see my green car above. As I said, I put on 205-50-15's. One side had tons of clearance, the other side rubbed and I had to pull the fender out.

Edit: my car seems to ride a lot higher than others. If I wanted to lower it, I think I'd have to pull out both fenders.

Edit: I'm talking about the rears. No issues on the front.

My 1st. 914 was a '71 that I picked up in 1973 ... before hell holes existed. It had Dan Gurney wheels, like these

Those steel wheels look good on there. I would get a new bumper top and valence. Maybe a LE spoiler from 914rubber. Wait for some 2.0 Fuchs at the right price.

Yeah, I've heard most rubbing issues will be at the back, because of the difference in track widths, something like 40mm between the front and rear. The 195/60-15s I have on there now seem fine at the back, but I'm wanting to go with a slightly wider tire, so I'm thinking about 205/55s. Maybe if I keep the stock 15x5.5 wheels I could go 205/50? I'm going to try and keep this 914 more or less stock, down to the wheels, and that's going to be a challenge for me!

So based on ^ picture, if I keep the stock 15x5.5 Mahles, 205/55s should work fine, so 205/50s are within the realm of the possible!

You might find 5.5" wheels to be too narrow to mount 205s, check your tire manufacturers specs. But if they do fit, you will have a lot of sidewall bulge.
socal1200r
Good point, forgot about the proper rim width for the tire. If I've got 195/60's on there now, probably the biggest I'll go is 205/55 on the stock 5.5 rim.

maybe, depends on offset and backset- mine rubbed so I had to do some fender stretching and still very tight, - in the end ive decided to get 6" width tires and I will be running 205/50-16 which are 8"wide tread, and are 24.1"tall, which is right on for our 914 height - I suppose for your 15" rims you could run 205 but I think 55 to be tall enough or your speedo to be accurate- do a tire calculator on line - you will see how they compare to stock - if I had put 195/55 on my 7" rims I would not have rubbed and been o.k. but like I said, the amount of tread on the ground would be the same as my 6" wide 16" fuchs with 205-50 tires, and better off set, more room on outside- now I could have run 944 turbo wheels and they would be almost 1/2" less to the outside and not rubbed like these did, - oh well, live an learn, - its better to stay with the 6" wide rims , plenty of tread on the ground and tire choices are good on the 16" types.
