I have a roof that just does not fit on my car. My car is a 73. How do I identify what roof I have (early vs late). What years are considered early vs late?

Is it true that they are not interchangeable?

Early has a thin rib over your head, later is wider.
It's true that they don't interchange properly.

I also just went through this. They are interchangeable if you don't mind seals that don't line up with your door. My 75 had an early top. There was a 1/4" gap between the top of the window and the roof seal. Other seals also didn't line up right. They changed the doors at the same time they changed the top in 73. Early doors, early top. Late doors. Late top.

What is strange is that I purchased a new main targa seal and the roof doesn't push in to the seal. I can't figure out the problem. I thought maybe I had the incorrect roof and that is why I posted this but it looks like I do have the correct roof.

The fronts are all the same. Maybe try some dry lube to help the panel slide in.

I am going to remove the lower targa seal (not the main) and see how it fits. Maybe I installed it upside down. I don't think so but wouldn't be surprised.

Is it a 914 rubber seal? I am having the same problem. That's my project for the day to figure it out. There was another thread a month ago with similar problems, but they got it to work.

Yes the seal I am using is from 914Rubber. Both the main seal and lower targa seal. Let me know what you find. The roof just will not push in to the seal.

i got everything to work. Trial and error. Per Marks instructions, do the sides first and then start with the center of the seal above the rear view mirror, push in as hard as you can to make sure the clip in the seal is seated against the frame. I also loosened the top latches as far as I couid. I also moved the top rear latches in as far as they would go. I also replaced the the top side seals. They were too long and had to be cut down. This was causing the rear of the top, to not sit flush on the targa bar.

Thanks Steve, I am going to remove the side seals from my roof (I need to replace them anyway). The top should sit flush with the rear at that point. Then make sure I can latch the top.
