Has anyone encountered an idle where its at 1700rpm unless you let the clutch out just for a sec to bog down the engine then it idles fine at 1000rpm?or if you down shift through the gear which allows the engine to slow down? could it be the distributor? and has anyone installed a new distributor from 123igintions?

Also how well does your 914 stop if need be eg( emergency stop)are the 914 brakes weak, do most people upgrade?

did u have a recent replacement of clutch or accelerator cable? maybe those two cables got tangled during the installation. Check your cables at the forward front of the tunnel. Use a phone camera or small mirror at the access (right side of the pedal) and see hows ur cables are.

Stock brakes are not weak. My car stops on a dime. There are upgrades of course but in good condition the stock system is more than adequate. Check the condition of your pads, rotors, soft lines, fluid and see if the calipers are working correctly. Also check the venting clearance on the rear brakes.

I have had an idle similar to that described when the advance in the distributor was hanging up. A good clean and re-lube of the advance mechanism should help with that.

Vacuum leaks are always a possibility, of course.

The stock brakes are woefully inadequate--if they have been sitting un-tended for 20-40 years. If the system is in top condition, they really work quite well. It helps that there just isn't that much mass to stop.
