is this a fuel delivery problem (done everything short of taking the gas tank out and getting it...."boiled?") or is this something like a CHT....it books from 0 to around 40...but...it's almost like the rings are shot, just no compression...i mean i can't even accelerate when going up a interstate hill....maybe it's just time to do all three.......

Mine did the same thing turned out to be combo fuel regulator and vacumn leak
but run compression check to be sure
Bleyseng
May 19 2005, 07:38 AM
and check the vacuum advance cuz that will cause the same (no power) symptom
bd1308
May 19 2005, 08:16 AM
well if i unplug it, i believe it runs better than when its plugged in....cause i did that and it idled like its supposed to....when its plugged in, it idles at like 300RPM....its barely turning over...and the idle screw has ZERO effect on the idle....even if the TPS is unplugged. would the compression go to the hell in like 500 miles? b4 it was great, now this started. i think i might try a regulator cause its random enough to be the fix, yet easier than getting compression stuff done

I would check your timing and set it at 27 degress BTDC @3500 rpms with the hoses off and plugged. Then set your idle rpms.
Low idle like 300 rpms would indicate the timing is off to me for starters.

i thought it was 27@3000???? *sigh* back to the start.....

It would be help ohter readers if you gave info on your setup. which engine ? which fuel system etc ?
I suppose that if no info is given it makes sense to assume "stock everything", but a lot of people in the club have modified their cars.
Hope you resolve your problem.

Adjusting the fuel pressure would make a difference accross the range of power settings and rpm situations. You may want to rule out ignition stuff before looking at the injection. Are your plugs clean ? nice fat spark ? vaccuum advance working properly etc . . .

When you are finally done screwing around with that Broken Dizzy please ask me to send you mine.
If it runs good vacuum line disconnected and runs like crap 300 rpm with the hoses connected YOU HAVE A BLOWN DIAPHRAM IN THE ADVANCE UNIT.
I and the rest here will be so happy when you break down and put good parts in your car. 120 MPH in my teener last sunday. held it there for about 3 minutes till I caught the next traffic group.
But I don't know what I 'm doing

I agree, seems like djet related problems usually occur only at idle, or affect all RPMs something this RPM specific is probably ignition related. Do a complete dizzy swap, and make SURE the hoses are in the right spots.

May 19 2005, 04:35 PM
the idle isnt the issue though...the issue is the lack of power. I will try a dizzy swap. 1.7 dizzy's arent compatable with 2.0 dizzy's right...due to the difference in circumference of the dizzy body??

I'm pretty sure the diameters are the same. Advance curves may be different, but not by enough to keep it from running. As long as it has the trigger points in the base, it should work, at least enough to see if you have a dizzy problem.

May 19 2005, 05:24 PM

Put the 1.7 dizzy in as they are damn near the same other than minor advance differences (so what).
After you get it in and set the proper timing, check the spark on a extra plug by pulling the #1 plug wire and putting on the extra plug which is grounded to the engine good. Have your helper turn over the engine while you look at the spark. It should be bright and a good clear spark.
Now that its running, check the fuel pressure witha pressure gauge. should be 29lbs.
Take it for a test drive.
BTW if the vacuum advance blows out its not that critical as the dizzy is mostly mechanical advance. The weights do stick and the advance won't work, so the engine has not much power do to the timing being stuck at 5 degrees AFTDC

you're gasping at straws because -- it seems to me -- you are not troubleshooting ultra-methodically. your car's problems could be any multitude of things. you'll never know until you STOP throwing parts at it and start throwing tools, knowledge, research, and logic at it.
