Full Version: Welding on AA Steel Flares

Hi All,

My body guy here in Australia is about to weld on the AA steel flares for my 914 GT Build.

He is an award winning 356 and 911 restorer but has not welded a set of flares onto a 914 before.

Are there any tips on this job for measuring up (other than measure twice, cut once rolleyes.gif ) or any useful Youtube clips, etc that anyone knows that would be helpful to ensure accurate positioning? And/or any tricks of the trade?

There are about a dozen good threads on flare install on this site. Opinions differ to positioning. My feeling is the rockers are a trim piece so fit the flares and then adjust the rockers to fit the flares, not the other way around. I’m not a welder but I do know you NEVER weld the flares all in one pass. It’s just small welds that get linked together with plenty of cooling time in between. Good luck.

Heres mine, i reshaped the bottom of each flare, after alining the top center to the car.
(if i did it again the only thing I would change, frt's 1/2" more foward) Running 9x16 on all 4 corners. Messure 10 times, and cut 1 time. I fit and welded mine before I had the wheels and tires. I focused strongly on the size of the tire space being equal, and distance from the hubs, using all of the flare, not just the outer look. Welded all 4 on.

Then I got the wheel and tire size to fill the rear space. buying the rear set first, using them to check turning clearance on the front. The 9" fit! Got 2 more.

Some say fit the flare to the wheel and tire. Using the tire as the guide, this will work also as a starting point. If you know the wheel and tire size you want to use. That was my biggest question.

I'm an amateur and I welded mine on.
I'm sure he doesn't need online help to figure it out

The easiest way is to pop rivet some steel to the original openings in 3 spots then put the flare over that and Mark and trim. To be honest they really only fit on one way and need just little tweaks.. That said I have done dozens of flares over the years including sc,st,,turbo, and GT flares so I feel it is straight forward.

So you didn't do any research before welding yours on?

Nothing wrong with looking for tips and tricks for doing a job, pro or not.

But for me, this is the benchmark. I always come back to this post.
In the back of my mind I always ask myself, at 61 years old can I ever get that good.

There's a set of Cleco flare hangers laying on the floor at Rothsport. I'll shoot a picture tomorrow. Allows you to hang and position before you tack.

A more modern way to install parts would be to use structural epoxy, this is becoming more common right from the factory. Somewhere on the web there was a vid showing a left side full length panel replacement on an Astro van using epoxy. The advantages are no warping, sealed joints and no bare metal where you can't get to it with paint.

Impact resistant adhesive would be a bit much for fender flares, regular would be fine.
