I've been sitting on what I believe to be a good, used transmission. I got it from a friend who knows these cars VERY well, but that was a long time ago and I always like to verify these things (within reason) myself. I'm changing out my clutch and my box needs some work, so now is the time to do it. It's not the end of the world if I have to swap my old box back in...

I got new seals all around for it, but is there anything I can check other than shifting through the gears on the bench to validate the syncros aren't toast? I'd rather not pull the stack...

I think you'd have to pull the stack to assess condition more accurately

if it shifts through all of the gears... then you know at least that its not broken or mis assembled....

but I don't think you can assess the wear to the slider and its ability to not grind without pulling the stack.... or driving it in a car.

That's what I thought. Just making sure I didn't overlook something.

You could also pull the gear stack and ship it to Dr. Evil to have him evaluate it. I understand it can be shipped in a cooler much cheaper than shipping an entire transmission.

Follow up on Aarons question. I have rebuilt a spare...actually John Larson did the rebuild before he passed.

I want to bench test the slider engagement. Is there any position diagram that shows the shift lever position ...meaning at the trans and the gear No.?

Thought this might be on Dr. Evils CD?

First gear synchro is worn on the replacement box and it’s obviously been apart as both gaskets on either side of the intermediate plate are torn.

I guess this will be the box that I do my rebuild on…
