Started rebuild last September, not just a simple build. Dropped in motor after several set backs, and decided to eliminate the HE's for several reasons. Only to find out no way to bolt up cooling tins under the heads. Did I miss something, or is there a way I'm not seeing? At my age, I should be driving a golf cart instead of my 914!
Are the bottom cooling tins necessary to insure the engine doesn't run hot? Thanks to all who reply.

Most important ones underneath are the ones that clip on the studs under the cylinders.

I take it you're referring to the warm air guides. They are NOT compatible with any version of headers that I'm aware of.

Could you refresh my memory with which studs your referring to, or a pic possibly? Thanks

They don't clip to the studs, they screw into the cylinder head and into the crankcase. They're up above the pushrod tubes (and have cut out sections that go above the tubes) pretty much tight against the cylinder fins.

It's very difficult to remove the head from the motor if you forget to remove those tins first. Don't ask how I know.

Dave is not talking about the ones pointed to. He's talking about #5. I have HEs on my 914 but do not have the tins pointed to.

Hey thanks Spoke, this engine has just been rebuilt, and I wouldn't want those missing tins to burn up my work. I think I might have a plan to attach those tins to the motor.......or not. I'm not the best fabricator!

they are warm air guides up to model year 74' heat exchangers. Driver's side is Trans specific. Pass is generic. They attach to the case AND the heat exchangers. You might be able to weld tabs on your headers to put them on. Depends on how your header piping is configured. The ones for 75-76' HEs might be adaptable.
