Does an alternative exist for the 17 mm drain and fill plugs in the transmission? That female 17 mm socket is a pain. Something with a male hex (for a wrench or socket) would be much better.

The 17 mm Allen is a pain? I just use an Allen socket on a ratchet. Never had a problem. I'm not sure that you will find a metric pipe plug, and if you did I'd be afraid of some road debris breaking off the head of that plug and dumping transmission fluid all over the highway.

Sure is, get the drain plugs from an early 901 (911/912) transmission, exactly the same except 17mm male end.
I have them on all my transmissions.

Searches for dimples and dimple were massively unsuccessful. Got a link?

You'll only find them used.
