SirAndy
Has anyone found a good compromise between service and cost for car insurance?

My 914 does *not* qualify for any of the garage queen insurance types, it's driven too much too frequently.
I currently have it insured with my other cars on 21st/Farmers but their rates are getting insane.

There has to be something better out there ...

Andy,

Try AAA as they're always competitive for us on several vehicles (cars & trailers), plus the towing & roadside services.

Tried to get an online quote, you can't list cars older than '85 or some such ...

Andy,

My 6 cost $830. Or so for 100g of coverage but it has to be covered in a garage from Hagerty. I am bumping it the 125K now. They look at the #41 build blog.

My 74 914 V8 car is covered for stated valve and as it does not run the 903 trans is covered as spare parts. I have AAA for the rest of my cars. When I got a quote from Hagerty for a 2017 Boxster turbo it was close as the AAA price because it was so new.

Hope that helps.

Check JC Taylor. https://www.jctaylor.com/

They insure modifieds.

I have had them for many years, with very good, friendly service. As long as you have another daily driver, and keep the 914 in a locked garage they will give you stated value, no mileage limits.

Do you have a working odometer??

I have Hagerty for both P cars. Best rates I have found...

American collector car ins. Had them for years. They never ask for annual mileage reports.

I will find out the deal is with collector cars at AAA. I work there and as a matter of fact I am the scrum master for the online quote team. type.gif

I use them. Good price and good service. Both American and the state of PA allow me to run my antique Porsche's pretty much as often as I like as long as I have a daily driver.

Andy has a garage in his new place. I think his main concern was the miles and using it on the weekdays.

I had AAA for 30-plus years. No claims, accidents, tickets, etc. I bought a new Porsche back in '97 and they refused to accept it. Their explanation at the time was they were seeing a spike in sports car claims and would not accept a new Porsche onto an existing policy. They then tried to refer me to another insurance company. Mind you, no claims, no issues, premium paid in full yearly and never delinquent.

I switched to Allstate for home, cars, umbrella, etc. Now they are getting really expensive at $2,700 per year for the Audi and the 997. Still no accidents, tickets, etc. I am beginning to think about looking for another insurance company. Oh, I have a garage and live in an area where we do not have Urban crime problems.

Finally, my Six is insured by Haggerty for a stated value. As soon as it gets on its wheels, (this week?) I am going to send them some pictures and bump the stated value by 50%, to more closely reflect the value of the car.

I really hate insurance companies but what are you going to do? confused24.gif

I had them for years and then they would not increase the value on my 6 at PMB as work was in progress. They caped out at $50,000. Hagerty looked as photos and said they would go to $125,000 if that is what I wanted.

I have never had any money paid to me on my classic cars. The proof is in the payments and service when there is a problem.

Eric uses them and he told me they have been a great company.

On Hagerty all you have to do is let them look at your build blog. That is what I did. They will be more than happy to go to $125,000 right now for your bye1.gif work in progress. They really are easy to work with.

Just called Hargerty and I just bumped my 6 up to $135,000 and my V8 car together is $1,328. here in California. High limits. They see the build blog and that proves to them the quality of my car.

Good to know for your 6.

Hagerty does not check mileage, you must have another vehicle that is your daily driver.

California places the requirement to require the car to be garaged so ALL insurers in CA that do Collector insurance will require the car be stored in an enclosed building.

I have cars that I don't drive because I only have a two car garage.

JC Taylor. Tell them what you think the value of the vehicle is and where you keep it and you are covered. Cost me $337 total for '68AMX, '60 CHEVY C10 Truck and the '74 914.
JC Taylor is part of the Foremost Insurance Group.

I've had Condon & Skelly insure all my collector cars for 30 years. Agreed value policy with no mileage limits. I just got the bill for 2019 and it's just under $1000.00. List of cars is in my signature. Their telephone number 800-257-9496.

I feel your pain Andy. I just got the latest policy renewal notice from Farmers and my 914 premium jumped from $231 to $451 (6 month policy). Got a quote from Hagerty for the same coverage $109. Really a no-brainer to switch over. Actually, the Hagerty insurance was a little better than my Farmers policy in that it also included Towing and Road Service, as well as, a higher Medical Payment (per person per accident) and a Guaranteed Payout Value. Good luck shopping!

The reason that the online quote system only goes back to 1985, is that we sub out collector insurance to another company and then we service the policy. You will have to contact your local AAA/CSAA office for them to quote you up.

Just 2 cents. I have had State Farm for years and was bad mood with them and went shopping. I went through the whole process with Nation Wide quotes ect. The person I talked to told me that Nation Wide owned Hagerty and it folded into the other policies. In the end I didn't change. At the time I thought it would be helpful on the old cars, but not on other items offset some of this. Not sure if this helps.

I just moved my 914 from AAA to Hagerty for $40,000 agreed value also raising liability coverage as that’s what the agent recommended and am saving $36 a year over AAA regular insurance. Also I mentioned to the Hagerty agent that I planned to travel to the Southern California for a couple of events and at least once a month drive.
scallyk9
I have Hagerty on both 914s and my Merkur. They did cover them when I only had a three walls but no garage doors "carport". Now that they are in a locked garage, the price is less, but their carport coverage was still considerably lower than the State Farm policy my daily drivers are on. The Hagerty Plus membership policy addition has been very useful to me.

The original post was by a person located in California.
California requires that the collector cars be in a fully enclosed permanent building, not Hagerty.
I have had conversations with multiple insurance companies and have been told this by each and every one.

Contacted AAA and they said they don't do collector/classic car ins for my year and they don't do stated value. Classic cars are only before '68. Not my '75. Going to have to try again with someone more knowledgable over there.

Yep....I had stated value for the 914 with them. When they finally agreed to do it my rate jumped. Then when I bought the 987.1 they wouldn't insure it after they told me before that they would.

I dropped them for the P cars and went with Hagerty's. They (AAA) still insure my other cars.

I just don't think they want to do classic cars so I took my business elsewhere.

Check with Grundy Insurance..
I had 2 cars insured with Hegarty but the agent
was less than truthful...
Ended up with Grundy....
But be aware that if you have cars insured with
2 different companies and are in a State that
assigns points to your license for accidents, they
will increase your rates and you will pay the penalty
premium increase on both policies if the driver
with the accident is listed as an operator on both
Policies..
In Massachusetts, that premium increase stays in
effect for 6 years if you have an accident that costs
more than 1000.00...

They will insure my p cars and our others for normal bluebook value. I am going to pull the 914 from the overall group and go separate for 914 with Hagerty, Grundy, etc.

I daily drive my 914 so any of the collectors insurance is out of the question. I have been with AAA since day 1 (over 9 years ago) but never hope to be in any claim situation as I don't expect to get anything else than 2k$. headbang.gif

I'm curious about other options, but I doubt there is.
I hate the risk, but driving my 914 everyday driving.gif priceless... biggrin.gif

I just did a new online quote at Hagerty for an 06' gto. Surprised they would insure a newer car and also had a pick option to drive it regularly (commute) - which is great my regular auto policy for 2 cars went from $150 to $400 per month once my daughter got her license EEK!

Don't feel bad. My son is 17.
2 daily driver's, 914 parked for the winter. USED to run 2 cars and a truck.Porsche on the road april to November. IF I have 3 vehicles and 3 drivers he becomes principal driver on one for $5000/year.
If I have 2 vehicles, my wife and I and he's occasional then he's $1000/year.

Porsche won't go back on the road until I can get him on his own policy with another company....
