Hi everyone,

I've already purchased the ignition and alternator harness from Jeff Bolwsby, along with the oil pressure cable so, from an engine bay perspective, I'm covered.

But, I don't think Jeff makes the main chassis harness.

George Hussey gave me a source for one but, before I go outside for it, I wanted to see if anyone here on the board makes them or has a good source for them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to keep it all in the family if I can. If not, I'm sure Mr. Hussey's recommendation will take care of me or I will find a local auto electric shop for it.

Nobody makes them for a 4. Kroon makes them for a six. They cost around $2,500-3K. Aase sales has some nos for a '71. The harnesses are sort of specialized so your local electrical guy won't have the right color wires or some of the connectors. Best thing to do is have someone go through your existing harness and touch up any problems. If you don't have one, place a WTB in the classifieds. You can usually get a used one for $100-200.

usually the harnesses are quite good, and unless someone has butchered it or had a fire or mice rat damage has occurred, the harness can easily be repaired. It is hard to remove unless the car is stripped as well, so my best recommendation is to repair yours. As previously mentioned, you can buy a used harness very reasonably to be able to have all of the proper colored and sized and ended wires to splice solder and heatshrink repair connections

I went through this a year ago. The best deal I was able to find on a used harness was $300. I decided to restore the one I had which was in pretty horrible shape. It took many hours sourcing materials and doing the repairs and still cost about $150. On Christmas, my neighbor who restores Mustangs saw my car and her first comment was about the "new" harness. She couldn't believe it was the restored original. That made me smile

I just took out the complete harness in my 74 parts car (09/73). I am not a wiring specialist but I think the harness is about 99% complete, but does not have the separate FI harness as this was a carb car. I think the only wires that were cut, but are included are one headlight wire and one turn signal wire.
I would be happy to get $250US plus shipping.

BTW, I vote for that thread to go in the classics. I printed out those photos you labeled when I was doing mine and they were super helpful.

The existing harness is in good shape, so I will clean up the tape and put it back in place then.

I was just hoping to find a new one since I'm this deep into it already, i figured why not go whole hog.

Hey Mike, I also thought there was no source for a new -4 chassis harness but someone on a Porsche 914 group on facebook shared this site; it's in German and mine's bit rusty, but I believe that the "hauptkabelbaum" (main wiring "tree") is the chassis harness. It's really spendy at 2,047 euros so not sure if it's interesting to you... just thought I'd share since I hadn't seen anyone making a new -4 harness. They also list various other 914 harnesses, though most of those are available from Jeff Bowlsby and/or Mark @ 914Rubber.
