I have an engine out of the car without a flywheel and no fan. I wanted to make sure it’s ok to turn the engine over without these attached. The reason I ask is that there is some front to rear play in the camshaft - which I understand is normal - but I want to make sure if I turn it over I won’t damage anything inside.

No reason it will damage anything. How have you determined the excess camshaft endplay? Maybe the camshaft thrust bearing is shot.
I put two bolts in the fan hub and a bar between them to turn over an engine with no fan or flywheel.
