Full Version: Factory 914-6 engine mount clearance issue?

Thinking of getting a 3.2 or a 993 3.6. If using the factory 914-6 engine mount will I run into any clearance issues around the crank pulley area?

I know of a few other issues that I may encounter. For you 3.2 and 3.6 guys out there any words of wisdom before I jump into this?

Never done it but understand pully has to be changed which elimenates
accessory drive ?

Hi Rory,

I just do not want to have to cut up a nice factory 6 mount. I have several different crank pulleys here that I could try out if need be. That would also change the fan ratio/speed too.

I'll send you a pm later on the other stuff we talked about.

Thanks,
Mark Henry

AC pulley won't work without major mods, find a single pulley with the same fan drive size. IIRC any air cooled pulley will work but there's a few different sizes of the crank pulley and then there's a couple different sizes of the fan pulleys.
Do a search on pelican, there was a list of the different sizes.

I went with the SC sized pulleys on the right , I can just sneak the belt past the tin, would be a PITA to change the belt in car without my big access hole.

Can't you just put the double pulley on a lathe and knock off the smaller one?

Yes..

Pretty sure the lower pulley on a 3.6 is also harmonic balancer
Steve
I took the single pulley off of my 2.7 and put it on my 3.2. I still have the double pulley off of the 3.2 in a box somewhere. I am using the rich Johnson Mount.

Here is a 3.6 with a stock mount unmodified. As others noted, only room for single belt.
My conversion already had the stock mount installed. If I were starting from scratch, I would use the style Bob Saville or Patrick Motorsports offers. Looks much easier/quicker to drop the motor.

The problem with those above mentioned mounts is that it mounts the engine about 3/4" lower in the chassis thus making the seals not able to meet up.. Then you also can't use a stock style oil line set up.

I have my nose dropped close to 3/4" and I think my seals fit better. I have be sure to hook them over the tin edge when I install, but they stay perfectly in place.
I can't use the stock oil pipe as I made my own mount which is much like a RJ mount.

I currently have a 131 mm crank pulley and stock 6 upper.
With the 131 mm installed it's tight to swap out the belt.
I don't think I would be able to get one on if needed. Maybe with the fan access hole cut into the firewall. Yeah I know some would say bad idea.. I also have a 3.2, 2 belt and single pulley here. I'll have to find them so I can test it out. I believe the 3.6 engine mount is a totally different style mount ? I'm also gonna stay with the factory 6 mount not an aftermarket unit.

Sorry to go backwards, but which above mentioned mounts are you referring to Ben? PMS / NARO RACING? or RJ or factory 6?
Also excuse my ignorance... thanks.

Sorry naroscape and pms..

I agree with Mark that the second groove can be machined off the original pulley.

Also, there should be a known correct distance from the
engine shelf down to crank centerline.
In my experience mechanics either don't bother to engage the seals to the engine tin
or it tends to get loose on its own. It's an important barrier.

gms
Luke, you could use a Clewett crank pulley?

I'm waiting to hear back about a 993 3.6. If it doesn't work out I'll go with a 3.2.

Any one have a late 84-86 915 trans converted with Bott's 916 kit all done that they may want to part with?

Didn’t LarryM have the trans and kit for sale some time ago.

Found it - http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...2&hl=Martin

Maybe also check with http://www.tangerineracing.com/
They build quite a few of them and had one for sale awhile back

Should you change your mind, and decide to use the actual /6 mount, I went that route, and only had to slightly modify the cone.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

i did 3.2 with my oem -6 mount - no problems - you can't use a 3.2 AC dual pulley - must use single non-AC pulley (i had 2 3.2's - one was AC the other non-AC, so i just used the non-AC pulley - iirc any older 911 single pulley should also work)

(p.s. thanks for buying the Bott kit!)

p. p.s. - for all: i have an oem -6 mount FS

Luke M
Thanks for the input guys. The 3.6 did not work out so I went with a 3.2 engine instead.
I have a single belt pulley from a 3.2 here. Once the 3.2 get to me I'll mess around with the mount. I believe it should work just fine.

Thanks Larry for selling me the Bott kit. beerchug.gif

Sorry naroscape and pms..

The naroescape And Patrick motorsprts mounts are different In that they install the engine At different hights. Patrick motorsport Mount puts the engine about an inch higher than the naroescape one.

That is good to know.. Stock oil line may fit then..

The 3.2 stock A/C pulley is easily cut off. On one conversion that I did, I used the 914-6 mount. On the others, I used modified 911 mounts with much shorter arms. Been doing it that way ever since. Of course, my front engine tin is a bit different than the stock 914-6 piece to accommodate the modified 911 engine mount.

I seem to recall that some of the later air cooled 911 engine cases are slightly different where the 914-6 mount and the 911 engine mounts bolt on. I think they added a threaded hole at some point and early mounts can be used if a stud is installed in the correct hole. The later mounts used the other threaded hole. (It's been a while since I've converted one, so perhaps I'm dreaming this up.)
