All,

I installed HELLA 9004 100/80WTB bulbs into my new Hella Glass housings. Rebuilt the headlamp system to perfection starting with all assemblies, wiring, relays (high Amp relays as well for the headlights).

My challenge is the 100/80 bulbs are not bright enough........ chair.gif

I have enough current available at the lamps to power near anything (12 gauge from the fuse panel with a 30amp fuse).

What would you suggest as a next step?

Thank you,

"E" codes? As I get older it is harder to get visible quality light out of incandescent bulbs, but with E codes on the 944 and 911 etc. I still find to be more than adequate even before bumping up to 80/100 bulbs. Also running fogs could give you nice short range fill.

Proper aim for e-code headlights is absolutely critical. Good info at Daniels Stern's page, here: https://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html

Even when properly aimed, beam pattern varies widely from one brand to another. Check out the diagrams from another Daniel Stern lighting page here:

I started with Hella and wasn't happy with them, so I went to Cibie. Finally found a set of NOS Marchal a few years back. Amazing difference, even with the standard H4 bulbs.

If you can't get the H4s to meet your needs, then I'd go to an LED replacement unit like the GE Nighthawk #69821.

IIRC, a few folks here on the 914world have them and seem to be happy.

Hope this helps!

I bought the GE Nighthawks. Then I bought a set for my dad for his jeep. I will eventually have them for all my 914's. They are very good.

I ran a new 8ga from the battery to a mini fuse block to new relays, at the fuse box. Also powers the rad fans and upgraded stereo.

Bulbs that bright need to be in Ecode housings. The DOT stuff will glare badly as 20% is focused upwards to light signs.

Currently I've got H4 HID retrofits in old Cibie housings and I plan to keep them a while.

If you can afford it just splurge for the Nighthawks or similar.

Cibie Z beams if you can find a set with H4s, or Nighthawks. I have both and love them. But I will say HIDs in proper reflectors and housings are by far my favorites.
