I’ve got a new speedo cable and could get 150 mph with a drill which means everything works with the cable and dash gauge. What’s the problem with the angle drive? How do I troubleshoot this?
ndfrigi
is your speedo gauge not goin up? maybe you got the wrong angle drive.
Try using a drill with screw driver tip to turn the cable, clockwise and counter clockwise and see if your speedo gauge will work on which turn.
I had issue before and ended up my angle drive is not the right one for 914.
My speedo arm move when I turn my speedo cable like doing a reverse.

How do I know if it’s the right one? I’m spinning the cable counter clockwise to get the speedometer to run.

If car can be driven, try to do a reverse drive and use celphone to record the speedo gauge if it is going up (I said use celphone so you will
not get into accident doing a reverse but looking at your gauge, unless you have a good clear on your road).

If angle drive is remove from transmission, turn one side of the angle drive and see if the other end turns the opposite way. My speedo on my 1st 914 has non working speedo gauge until I compare my extra angle drive to the one in the car, one angle drive turns both end on same direction and one angle drive turns the opposite way. Just can’t remember now which one is the correct angle drive since I fixed mine last 2012.

If I have time tomorrow, I can take a video of that angle drive since I still have it and I have both kind of angle drive on my boxes of parts.

Chunk it and buy a rebuilt one from bruce. IIRC, he sells them cheaply. @bdstone914

I have them but they are not rebuilt.
They all wear.

Remove the cable at the speedo drive. Try to turn the tab on the drive. If it turns it is shot.

What does this thread have to do with reverse lights?

Funny that nobody else mentioned this! I was troubleshooting the reverse light path before I switched to the speedometer. Changed the title.

Unbelievable, I just pulled the car backwards down my street and the speedometer works! So I must have a 911 part. @bdstone914

problem solved! now just need the correct angle
drive.

Does this mean I can loosen the large nut and only replace the 90 degree angle part? I don't have to remove the entire assembly released by the set screw? Appreciate the advice here to solve the problem.

Pelican was $168 and Porsche was $200.

Yes loosen the big nut and remove the angle drive only.
not not remove the 13mm hex head bolt that holds in the angle drive bushing.
You probably have a 911 speedo drive. Look at the part number on the end cap. It will start 911

A lot of money for that angle drive.
How much more is a GPS speedometer versus bouncy 914 speedo?
76-914
About $100 before tax, Steve. beerchug.gif
