For everybody out there running a GT style cooler, would you mind posting a few photos of your cooling setup and fans?

Currently re-routing my system to use a SETRAB type cooler (example here: Patrick Motorsports Website) however I don't see any reference to fans, and it doesn't seem as though it's an option to purchase.

Also, appreciate any 'pointers' in the right direction when it comes to vendors that might have similar products / solutions. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi - so for my 2.2 six based GT tribute, I used a Behr oil cooler from an old 300D Mercedes. Sourced from a pick-n-pull. It fits nicely in the space under the shroud, you just have to deal with the metric threads and the placement of the inlet/outlet (one each end; its a single pass, unike the original GT ones which were double pass). I recall it cost me more to have it flushed & pressure tested as it did to buy from the yard....!

So like the GT, no fans used. I run a thermostat near the oil tank and 10AN lines running up and down the rocker panels. In CA weather I rarely see oil temp above 80degC (bear in mind I also have the forced air cooler on the engine too).

Hope this helps? Photos below show build progress; I made a up a long bracket to support it which ends being part of the front end reinforcment. Also, I didn't do the full floor cut out - just two openings near the back of the shroud to vent the hot air.

20 row Setrab with fan pack and thermostat switch.
Air comes in through the stock holes in the front body panel and exits through the body plugs.

I don't run any fans on mine, the only time i've ever seen oil temp get up to 210-ish was when i got stuck in stop & go traffic in Salt Lake City with 100+ ambient temp.

Same with my 3.2. When stuck in traffic it would get hot. I installed an in-line -12 fan thermostat from summit racing.

Patrick use to sell the fans that fit perfect on his setrab cooler. I bought the same ones from Amazon. I have the part number some where. I installed a relay with the thermostat. Never have to worry about it over heating. Like a modern car the fan comes on and stays on until it cools down.

I think using mb911’s oil lines also help dissipate heat along their length instead of the braided hoses. My conversion just used a Turbotrol cooler in front to control temps with AN-12 lines with good results.

Depends where you live and time of year. if your six is bigger than a 2.7 and it’s over a 100 degrees outside and your stuck in traffic with no air flow, it will over heat no what setup you have. In so cal it can get up to 110 in the summer. AZ and Vegas is worse.

That's why I decided on a fan pack. It's my only cooler. I'm using a oil cooler bypass plate on the engine.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I should have specified my current setup; 3.6-964 engine, no on-engine cooler, braided 12AN lines with a thermostat upfront. When complete, the oil will travel up the passenger-side, and meet the thermostat before either cycling back or going through the cooler (inlet and outlet on the same side). As I'm in Southern California and quite often subject to very heavy traffic, I feel I absolutely need a fan setup.

Currently looking at either having the fan on the floor pulling air in and then out, or directly on the cooler itself (preferred). As it goes, at the beginning of this processI didn't fully understand all the options associated with the fans attached to the cooler and didn't know the plastic rod mounts were an option. I assumed you had to fabricate a bracket, so grateful for this help and understanding from you all. aktion035.gif

From what I see on the PMS site the general dimensions of the coolers are 17.75 x 4.25 x 1.90. Calling a few vendors tomorrow (PMS, CSF, etc.), and will update here and my project thread for the community.

No fans on a 3.2 six. My temperatures used to be dramatically high on the gauge till I replaced the sender with the proper one for the guage... blink.gif

Curious if you are running a Steve Wong Chip? Mine seems to run a little hotter with the chip, but it's worth it. Drive-ability is night and day better. Much smoother response.
Mine is also a high compression Euro 3.2 motor, which probably also makes it run hotter.

PMS did fans on the floor section for mine, I only turn them if it gets too hot with little air flow, i.e. sitting in traffic or really pushing hard when it's hot outside. I have a manual toggle switch to turn them on, normally I don't need them at all.

agree.gif Having seen it in person, Erics car is a 'case study' for perfection.

Called around this afternoon, most vendors I talked to couldn't quite comment on exact fitment, and so I eventually went with the PMS Setrab unit. Happy to get that checked off, and very grateful to the help of all here on the site.

I think PMS gets it from Getty. AIR also used to sell the main cover. Getty sells the bottom piece to.

I remember that I sourced mine on eBay a few years back, I believe it was the same guy/company that was producing side-skirts and valences. If my memory serves me right, he/they were out of Murrieta/Temecula, CA

Enrique, Not sure whether you have seen it or care to go this way, but in my opinion the very best front cooler shroud treatment is the one used by Eric Shea PMB on the car in this thread

It has been seen in some other cars also. Not sure if it incorporates fans but it could easily accommodate two pull fans in each side of the split plenum. Not original GT looking but very cool.

Actually making it out of aluminum is not a bad idea. A top, bottom and the sides.

Of course it always seems easy in my brain but is invariably two or three times harder and more time consuming to execute in reality!

If I may.... as Mark sayes, more work.... but for me it's personal satisfaction.

^^ That approach is great because it leaves you with a Frunk that's actually "usable"

Between the ducting and the Petersen oil tank, I can't realistically put anything in mine dry.gif

Here is my system which is a Patrick Motorsports Setrab unit on a modded 993 3.6. I ran mine for a couple years without fans BUT I got caught once on a backed up freeway and the temps went thru the roof. I added 4 puller fans with a tstat switch. The system configuration, install, fans, and electric circuit were all my design. This system has been a life saver.

I like the shroud that vents out the side, but mine is for a vintage racer, and any ducting that cools the brakes is not allowed.
I have to stick with the GT style for now

I can get a quote from Ben and run the group buy if there is interest but it's not worth it if your not ready to pay $750 for one. It may be more, it may be less but $750 is a reasonable number to get the conversation started.

I also thought stainless steel would be pretty cool.

Getty FG one is $350. the carbon fiber is $550. AIR FG one is $175. $750 is pretty steep premium.

Yes. It would be styled like Kelly’s orange car. Air ducted around the spare and out the side. Completely different than the traditional GT style. I’ve also talked to Ben about a more traditional GT style but in aluminum or SS. He made one for his car in aluminum and even if we don’t do a group buy, I’ll have him make me one. I’m guessing $500 +\- There are already plenty of companies that do cheaper glass. I want a premium product in steel or aluminum.

Thanks for the continued references everyone. PMS Setrab unit arrived yesterday and it's a 'perfect' fit inside the should. Now, I'm eager to see how I will need to cut and modify the fiberglass to accommodate the inlet/outlet fittings. Not sure if I should create a small 'box' on the side, or notch it so that it slides on-and-off.

For those interested in the Setrab unit, a few basic dimensions for you regarding sizing....

Overall length: 21-7/8" (22" with included fittings)
Overall height: 4-5/8"
Cooler width: 1-7/8" (3-3/8" with the brackets)

For those of you that have a similar solution, this thread would be very helpful to see how the hoses enter / exit the shroud and any suggestions on fan wiring. I've purchased 2x Spal 4" pullers fans, and the plastic tabs to mount them directly to the cooler; I plan on linking to it in my blog. Looking at you all, @eric9144 and @Marv's3.6six

@eric9144 - To your previous question, no only the stock 914/6 oil tank for me. The engine setup in the previous car had a similar setup to yours with a large tank in front and 2x breathers, but that was specifically for the track.
