When I saw it at Luft last year, the seats were worn and ripped up. I’m sure it was quite a hardship trying to find that fabric.*

*P.S. While digging I found a SpeedHunters article with some great photos showing the wear in the seats, they look the same in the RMS photos - So I suppose the fabric was not replaced.

I thought the only one done that way is the one AA have?,don't really know just saying,interesting how the door panels are,kinda more 911.

I test drove it in 1980 or so, when Otis brought her by and had a look at my converted 914-6 2.7 turbo. After he took a turn in mine he needed the Boost added to his yellow 916. It took me a week to convince him Not to alter that limited production 914...and the 2.4 mfi stayed.

This car belongs to Dr Konrad, author of the RS buch. Saw this car personally, its beautiful.

After Otis it was in Japan for quite a while.. Would love to see resto pics,,,,Germany 914s are not rust free, even if stored away after first years after father land..

As mentioned here's the two photos I took at Luftgekuhlt last year.

took a look at the RM pictures and it looks like it has a set of new leather seats in addition to the worn ones in the car.

how many 916's were made, was it 11 or 12?

Nice car. Glad they are offering it with the leather seats- the cloth seats, though original, are ugly. Let's see if I sold the house......

any guess on the what the going price will be? i know its not Brutus, so has to be below that but $250k? $500k?

At Luft I was looking at the car and heard some guy talking to another guy and said this is the nicest clone conversion he had ever seen...lol I told him it was the real deal.

This car is very much the real deal, and has had some exceptional caretakers along the way. Will be curious to see how it does, and hope the new owner will exercise it—as the 916 I drove was a lovely, balanced thing. The steel roof, 2.4S MFI, and 915/916 gearbox indicated what Porsche wanted to change a couple of years into the 914-6 program and after racing and rallying the platform in the world's best events. But alas…

There's no question Porsche made the right "business" decision in nixing the 916 and producing the RS 2.7…for so many reasons. This admitted even if I'll always be more of a 914 guy than a 911 guy.

Had no idea Otis wanted to twin-turbocharge it, but maybe that becomes a thing once you've owned a 917/30 alongside a 917K?

this is 011 grubers car, and has been meticulously restored, even went to the extreme of painting it white first (as they all were except for brutus. THAT is why it has the L80E tag in the door jamb. Notice that our 916 also has the L80E tag in the door jambClick to view attachment

That is correct 10 white cars with black interiors were ordered, these where 1971 914/6 chassis as they have 1971 production numbers.
They were prepared at Karosserie Baur the German chassis modifier as directed by Ferdinand Piëch.

My guess would be that it is a Hirschmann antenna.

This would have been a great car to have at last fall's Rare Shades event... though we did have Brutus and several other special 914's...

11 & 1/2

I used to drive this 914-6 that was owned by a Porsche Employee and sent back through to 916 Specs. 35 Pages of Factory Documentation. Long Sad story, it still exists without any of it's important bits

Hello, forgive my ignorance what is the difference from a 916 and 914-6 ?

only 11 916 made , about 3300 914-6 made, they had a 2.0L 6, fiberglass removable top, etc, chrome bumpers .
the 916 had either a 2.4L or 2.7L motor, welded in place hard steel top and fiberglass formed front and rear bumpers and factory steel flares, fancy interior. 10 of those and one that was owned by Porsche family that had a 2.9L factory race motor, these were prototypes and it never went to production was made around the end of 1972
i think, whereas the 914/6 were made between end of ‘69 for the 1970MY and ran up to about 1972 if my information is correct, actual production car, but stopped due to low sales and cost over runs due to weak dollar. cost was getting too close to a 911. btw the 916 wirh the 2.7 motor was the fastest car made by Porsche at the time. lighter than a 911, faster quicker better handling, but would have cost close to $15,000 retail if they had gone into full production.
a quick google search will bring up some exact numbers dates and history but that’s what i’ve gleaned from reading here and a few other places.

The 916 is supposed to have the classic 1970's "integrated into the windshield antenna", which of all the 916 parts is the most impossible to find. Easier to fab up a steel roof & weld in than find a windshield with an integrated antenna

yes that is the 916. last painted about ten years ago now. The door jamb was not painted, as you can see Porsche slopped the paint around the L80E Karmann light ivory paint plate when they color changed it to silver

It would have, but we requested Brutus from Canepa because the yellow car had just been seen at Luft. Nice to change things up. Ironically, it turns out that was the last time Brutus was seen in a color that was black. It'll return in a "rare shade."

And maybe it means the tally is 11.5 or even 12.0? There was a white "916" built by a Porsche employee at the factory (or near it) using factory resources (parts? tools?) detailed in a book. Clearly not a 916. Sort of. Pasha interior, iirc.

Seeing the pics of that in-glass antenna brings memories of driving that car back…it was the strangest thing, driving a car that was worth more than a brand-new Bentley that rolled by on 101 but looked for all the world like a 914 with a body kit. I dug that about it, and the full-leather interior, but what I loved most was the delicious balance of the 2.4 MFI with that chassis. It was really nice...

Look very carefully at the windshield. I can see a red color line or wire in the windshield. This may be the antenna on the 916

I believe your right Bob. I've never seen that windshield on another teener other than the 916, yet a couple of 916s have a regular antenna. The lack of consistency doesn't bother me since they're all prototypes.

Very disappointing to me, but they were certainly taking a chance on an online auction. The guy on this car hardly broke even selling it that cheap

Too bad...the dif between what was thought it would fetch and reality prob does'nt mean much to the seller. Or the market correction as set in. I did not care for the interior one bit. Bland. Too brown.
