I just converted my 914-6 gearbox (901 dogleg) from tail to side shift.
I have now to find a solution for the shift rods. What would you recommend?
Will it work if I am using the complete line (gearshift, front and rear shift rods) coming from a '73 model? What are the points of attention? Any hands-on experience?
Many thanks.

use all of the late model stuff 73-76 straighten the rear rod to 39 inches, use a firewall conversion bushing and you will be all set

Excellent. Thank you George. What do you mean by strengthening the rear rod to 39"?

"Straighten" make the rod straight, just a slight bend near the chain case.
One of the best upgrades is the Tangerine racing shifter console.

as suggested above
This was assembled from a 4cyl rear shift part with side shift ends welded on.
requires attention to clearance issues .....exhaust etc.etc.

I still do not understand why the rear shift rod needs to be straightened? Why the stock shift rod cannot be used without mods?

I guess that the answer is because of the headers (I am using 914-6 GT type of headers).

I did what 6not4 illustrates in the 1st pic. Straight shot. Also welded in an Apex helo universal joint.

I have bought a lot of second hand gear shift rods for the 914. While I am pretty sure about the correctness of the rear shift rod, I have some doubts about the front one.
Does any of you have the exact length of the front shift rod (914-4 >'73)?
Many thanks in advance.

I made a fixture to do them.. Did one for
@jwinner and one for another member along with my car. They work really well and not a very convoluted setup

The rear shift rod is no more an issue. I am concerned by the front one as I am coming from a 914-6 set up. I need more details about the length of the 914-4 front shift rod to pick up the good one (I recently purchased a bunch of 914 rods but do not know which is the correct one).
