Just put them on today and took a cruise. These are last year's so if new ones are even better, get some.
Really is a race tire for the street. Not quite as sticky as the Proxes (40 treadwear) track tires I had, but a lot smoother. Buzzy at Hiway speeds, but just the ticket for canyon carving, and 205/50's really suit the gearing of my stock 2.0 FI. 2nd gear starts and Mulholland becomes a a 2 gear road, 3rd and 4th. I may even pay Lagunero for them biggrin.gif

Do you think the rt615's are softer? I never rode on the rt215's

Stock 2.0 Foooks. You rode in my car with the 195/65 street tires. Big difference! BTW, room left, so I bet the 225's will fit on the back.

I've got to say that I don't like 205-50s very much for a street car. They've pushed my cruise rpms to almost 4000 rpms unless I'm driving really slow. They are great for AX though.

agreeed...

going with 225/50's for that extra .5" diameter difference wacko.gif biggrin.gif
Howard
Well, if my calculations are correct wacko.gif
Circumference of 205/50/15 is 7.6% less than the stock 165/80/15 or 195/65/15. If so 3500rpm stock setup would require ~3766rpm with 205/50's. Will check with GPS when I get a chance. My speedo was dead on with 195/65's.

Also twice the price. I have had both and I think they are comparable.

In the latest Grassroots Motorsports Tire Shootout in the non-race rubber with DOT approval class the Falken Azenis new model took top honors, the older model 215 I think was almost as good but suffers from heat when pushed. This is the reason I guess behind the tire misting going on at the AX grid. The newer ones were better but still suffer when hot.
I have a set of the older ones on my 240Z...

I have a set of the older Azenis on my 2.0L Fuchs for AX and I am looking to get a set for the 16x6's I am getting this weekend to put on my 912 turbo project. Does anyone have a good source for well priced RT 615?

hahaha. I just killed my AO32 Rs with my V8 car. I baked them to threads in front of my house. Attracted 2 Cobra drivers in the process. I bought a new set of RT 615s. Man are they slick out of the box. it took 3 practice sessions to rubb off teh mold release, but once it came off, I knew I made teh right choice. most guys get a full AX season out of them
Andyrew
What sizes do they come in?

17's?

Can you get them up to 255 or bigger?

I hate you all with little itty bitty tires...

yall need big arse rubber.

How would you compare them to Kumho Victoracers?

I have driven Azenis 215, 615 and the Yoko A032R Softs over quite a few miles and in AX as well on three of my cars. Azenis is the most affordable by far and they wear very well, but the Azenis doesnt match the Yokohama in terms of grip in most situations.

I wouldnt expect a harder compound tire like the Azenis to grip as well as softer compound tire. I think in some situations those Yoko's grip as well or even better than harder compound Hoosiers - cold days on the first couple of corners they heat up quickly, but lose their advantage after a couple of corners.

If I had only one tire to choose from I'd go with the Azenis as it is the most practical. The Yokohamas are expensive as you mention (Yoko was $110 compared to $62 for the 215) and wear twice as fast, but reward with higher levels of grip. Yokohama's also have stiffer sidewalls that result in tire having better turn in than the Falkens. The Azenis does float around on the rims with their softer sidewalls, but they are still far superior to most other street tires. I'm about to go with Azenis 615's on my Boxster that should be fun! If money was not concern I'd probably go with the new Yokohama Advan 048 on that car.

Howard...how you doing? Haven't tried Azenis ... but put on two Toyo's RA-1's on the rear(have odd rear size 255-16-50). Stuck really well at "big willow " last weekend. Have Kumo MX 's on front(225-16-50). Still having trouble with" turn 8"....not enough downforce yet ("need a wing"). Hey...when is the next coffee meet/run? driving.gif robert d.

I bought my rt 615's for $72 ea a couple months ago - havent checked prices lately. Put my order in before anyone had stock and prices were low.

Wow looks like they have repositioned the 615 as a premium tire and kept the 215 around.

Edge racing has 215 again but its a little more expensive too. $72 ea compared to the $62 ea I spent last year.

Ok, of anyone cares, put batteries in my trusty $79 GPS. 8% difference close enough for government work, so indicated 60 on stock speedo is actually a hair over 55.
5th gear ~MPH=2x 100 RPM. 3500rpm is 71.5mph on my car.
echocanyons
I'm pretty sure the 215 was dropped and all that is still out there is old stock

I searched for over a week trying to find someone with them in stock and finally went with the rt615 (I mainly wanted the 215 over the 615 because of the price)

Not true... rt615s have the same treadwear as rt215s.

The rubber feels softer to the touch, but that doesnt mean its a softer compound.

The biggest problem I have seen with the Falkens: people running them on low tire pressures. I personally found they worked MUCH better with 40+ in them hot. This totally goes against the typical tire pressures for Hoosiers/Kuhmo's, but the sidewall REALLY stiffened up when I run them up in the 40 range. 40+ gets rid of the squishy feeling.

Next tire for me is the Avon. Lighter than a Kuhmo 1lb heavier than the Hoosier and cheaper (last time I checked) than the Kuhmo... first experience with them.. they where stickier than the Kuhmo and on par with the Hoosier.

Yep I had best performance at about 36 to 38 psi. I know some on this board swear they get better performance at pressures below 30 psi with Falkens. At pressures below 35 the sidewall moves around and turn in becomes very sloppy. I run my Yokohamas and Hoosiers much lower.

Per the GRM article:

fastest street tire Azenis @ 42.9
fastest R spec Kumho 710s @ 41.0

This is with 2 drivers with 3 quickest runs each averaged.
Tire size is 205-15.
Aaron Cox
i agree with brad, anything under 35 psi they feel "mushy" - run em at 39...and it wakens them up a bit smile.gif

AA
Trekkor
I ran mine at 39 front and 41 psi rear.
Great upgrade from my 420 treadwear streeter's.

I agree with Grant, the Yoko A032R's are by far, a better tire.

KT

( I'm looking foward to Yokohama's unveiling of their new Advan track tire this fall after the ALMS #43 Porsche finishes testing for them ) cool.gif

Yeah, but the Yoko pushes you into a different class if your car is stock. The Falken on the other hand doesn't cost you anything in classification points.
J P Stein
The Yok softs finished last in the R spec catagory by about 1.5 sec. Given another chance(?) it was down the .7sec
nebreitling
as long as you're running yoko '32s you might as well run victoracers for substantially less. excellent all-round competition tire with limited street use.

nate (back from oklahoma)

p.s. from what i've heard and read from scca guys, i'm not surprised that the kumho 710's out performed the hoosier A's. and for like 30bucks/per tire less!

Given that tires all run at differnt optimum pressures how did they figure out what optimum pressures to run for each tire? I havent read the GRM article but I have found a lot of their test techniques to be fairly subjective and opinion based. Yokohama's really hook up at pressures under 30 psi. I'm also wondering if they ran tire continously or let them cool between runs. But having said this I dont doubt they ran behind R compound slicks.

Also there arent many R compounds I would drive on the street like the Yokohamas.
J P Stein
I just noticed a problem with the test data. They used different cars for the 2 types of tires.....dickheads.....so the time comparo is drivel......sorry bout that.

Trek,

Dont get your hopes up about the Yok's. They wont have YOUR size for another year or so..

B << Was given Yoks all of the 03 season in GrandAm for a GT3RSR.

Trekkor
The Yok A048R's will be available soon, if not already in 205/50/15.

I wonder how those'll work as track tires?

It was fun hearing from the #43 crew first hand and then hearing it on CBS today during the ALMS broadcast.

I wished I would have returned your call. I would have hooked you up with the "Orbit/Yankees" GT3RSR. A good friend of mine (Rob Joy) is a lead crew member for Leo Hindry's team. Rob is loaded with kickass info. Their lead mechanic was with Dick Barbour back in 2000. His name is Tim.

Love RA-1's. But they are track tires, almost slicks, and just about useless near any water. Had to take them off last winter with all the rain here. Wet spots in the canyons until this month. But the Falkens are street tires pretty good at imitaing the Proxes.

I spoke to a factory rep. He asured me that teh 215 was superseeded by teh 615 and that the 615 had a stiffer sidewall. next AX I will try higher PSI in my 615s. I was running at 30 hot. i need a pyrometer
