Full Version: Repacking CV Joints

Time to re-grease my CV joints and I have a tub of Lucas Red "N" Tacky Grease that says it is a high quality lithium complex grease fortified with extreme pressure (EP) lubricant additives that inhibit rust, corrosion, and oxidation setting it apart from similar greases. It is rated as NLGI #2 and GC-LB, although I haven't yet searched out those specifications. Made in the USA. I'm using this on the wheel bearings of my trailer and was wondering if it also could be used for the CV Joints on the 914. Was wondering if anyone has used this grease for this application successfully, and/or if there is another grease that may come highly recommended from experienced users. I like Red and Tacky on my trailer too
but only use the Swepco 101 moly grease on CV's

Yep. You want a grease with molybdenum disulfide. Just don't ask me to pronounce that wink.gif.

Swepco 101. or Liqui Moly 2003. the nice thing about the LM grease is that one tube is almost exactly what's recommended per joint so there's less guesswork with greasy fingers.

I was surprised to see the photo displaying upside down, as it looked correct in the preview, but not in the post. Weird!

Great info! Another project while I wait for my heads to come back, getting a loose valve guide fixed!

I prefer Swepco, but I’ve used Sta Lube CV joint grease which is easy to find locally

I went with a recommendation from the off-road guys - 50-50 mix of Swepco Moly and BelRay. Been using it for years. No failures so I guess it works. I do periodic CV maintenance, cleaning and repacking.

Same here but I haven't used the StaLube since using the Swepco.
I also will use the packets that come with new Lobro CV's.

The stuff in the packets is GKN moly. The people who make our CV joints.

GKN moly grease in 80G packet #9004311
