Full Version: What is the current “Holy Grail” part nowadays?

As the title states, what’s the elusive unicorn that would make you lose your mind if you found it at a swap meet or buried in an old timers garage?

I understand more parts are being reproduced and that’s awesome but sometimes original just can’t be beat or reproduced.

Please exclude one off or pure race stuff, while very cool and has potentially Uber cool stories behind them, they weren’t exactly offered to the public making them more unobtainium then holy grail. I guess I mean factory or factory authorized (or unauthorized) parts so we will start there.

Searched for 3yrs before Bruce Stone hooked me up for one. I wanted original not a repro.

Which version? poke.gif

For me, it was a really nice 70-72 chrome front bumper (thanks, Oscar!). Now, it would be a good pair of 15x7R wheels.

truly most elusive - but given that the brits are repro-ing MG shells, they may not be far off ????? (AA via China perhaps with $10K deposit upfront?)

The day is coming very soon when a solid, rust free, body in white will seem like a bargain at $25K.

Best I can tell, there are three kinds of '73 doors: no bars w/early windows, no bars w/late windows, and bars w/late windows.

I have a right hand door from a Euro 73. It has the late window mechanism, but no crash bar.

I know it was a euro car because I parted out the Grey Market 914 it came off of.

My trips over to Dan's (rev in peace) clandestine A.I.R. "Body Shop" spanned 2 decades. I've got parts on 2 of my air-cools from his molds. Always a gentleman, great at his design + mfg. craft ; and knew everyone like Otis Chandler, James Garner, Richie Ginther. When he sold off that property, another buddy of mine Jack Kimoto bought the building, and brought in a new spray booth from Italy. Dan moved on to Irwindale.

There is nothing quite like that smell, of NOS cardboard and wheel, I wish I could bottle it!

Ah, you shook a memory loose…of that time I found an NOS 15x5.5-inch Mahle gasburner in a yard sale while driving by. I think my 914 had four-lug wheels back then, but I couldn't pass it up at $50—even as a high-school kid working at Toys R Us.

Guy never put his cordless phone down while doing the deal, as he had a band and was always booking gigs. Had a Bora in the driveway and a Bimota in the garage. Was a fun guy, and got to know him a bit as the years went by after that.

That wheel is still in my front trunk as a lightweight spare…
