Is this split in the corner of the bracket normal, or should it be continuous (either the original stamping or welded)?

Although I have not looked at mine, one would think it isn't a big deal. There is not that much spring pressure or force on these. It should be fine.

no thats right.
i looked at mine which is original.
the two folded bits of steel in the stamping meet right there.
no weld as far as i can tell.
it looks a little cleaner on mine but its where there is a join between two separate bits of metal as it folds up.
i can try and photograph mine if you want as its all factory still.

Since the hinge has considerable weight on it, get another one.

Appears to be that way from the factory. Both hinges off my '74 look the same...

its not pretty. but it is a complex pressing. double fold for spring retainer. and its thick metal mercedes benz style, not like present day options of tissue paper tin or plastic.

Thanks, guys. If I had noticed before painting, I would have welded it. Now I am not sure if I want to back to the paint shop.
