What do you think? At least it was creative. Now to fix this. Where would you start?

So, he welded your trailing arms to the engine mount bar?

Effectively eliminating any sort of suspension travel?

ok, so I was seeing the same thing then.
I was scratching my head there for a minute.
mepstein
I was also wondering what was going on or what they are trying to accomplish.

I need more info on what, exactly, is going on here. There's no way that could be welded to the engine mount and the trailing arm and prevent things from moving. No way that weld/bracket is strong enough to stop things moving.

Does it flex in some magical way? Or is it just being used as the e-brake cable "mount"?
Curious minds want to know!

I have no idea what is going on. I assume I should just remove and then start fixing the rust????
mepstein
I would do your best to take the chassis back to stock.

Just sort of makes you scratch your head and say WTF.gif

The small piece of sheet metal over the gaping hole between the long, the inner rear bulkhead and the outer rear bulkhead was a nice touch!

For the OP, you're my hero for taking this on! Save another one!

In my experience, PO stupid is like an iceberg. 9/10ths are hidden from sight. Good luck (and keep posting).

I didn't notice the "rust repair" until you mentioned it. Wow, that is a special kind of POStupid!!!

The Ansen (brand) ground grabbers did wonders on eliminating rear wheel hop, under drag racing conditions: but can't figure out this Darwin's stick-welding nightmare on a 914.
Round up the usual grinders + face shields smile.gif

The first thing I would do is replace those Jack Stands....
Heard of too many failures with those.

Looks like another adventure coming, hold on tight.
rgalla9146

That is to disguise the collapsed rear suspension.....the ultimate used car crime.
"Yes sir, it's got the racin' shocks.....real stiff.

NO bolts in the engine mount bar? Is that so the assembly can still pivot with the suspension?

OR are the early bars recesses for the bolts?

If I remember correctly, early bars use recessed Allen heads.
Root_Werks
Oh goodness, remove and don't replace.

Could they have been trying to support the trailing arm because of a failing or failed inner suspension pickup ear? The chassis looks a little crispy on the drinker side....

They welded that on so they wouldn't have to go back to recover the right rear wheel when the swing arm came off.

Maybe he was trying to turn the engine mount bar into an anti-sway bar?

Oh, wait a minute, the engine mount bar is anchored at each end. Never mind. laugh.gif

What was he trying to do? Did you drive the car with this modification? If so, how did it drive? idea.gif

"great" men think alike.
not saying i'm great but y'know whad i mean beerchug.gif

chassis looks like its made of transparent steel - this is after the rarely observed event when the hell hole goes supernova and turns into a black hole?

maybe should not cut bar loose just yet. at least can still be pushed around.
IronHillRestorations
Looks like they were trying to break the outer engine mount consoles by torquing out the engine bar

That is my interpretation. It does have torsional rigidity sufficient to serve as such, but...
there are better ways to do this.
mbseto
Well, we can all look at that picture and say, at least I know I am not the sharpest hammer in the bag!

@jwjwjw

you should post these pics over at the other DAPO thread. You have a real contender.

The pin type has a much lower failure rate. One of the members here had a real bad day with those holding up his car.

I like this style; 3 welded .250" thick disc-pads on the ground , HD welded construction, pin type.
Just search online for the deal, like: Jegs, Summit, Pegasus Racing

I've seen some crazy, bad, stupid repair work on 914s,
but that takes it to a whole 'nuther level.
