My '71 914-1.7 has the dreaded winkin headllamps disease. It started out sporadically but has become annoyingly regular now. When she acts up, I calm her down by manually adjusting the headlamps into the full up or full down position as needed.

I pulled all the threads I could find on this problem and there seems to be a consensus that the relays are the problem. I switched out the relays with no luck in curing the winkin.

I did notice that in the full up position, the driver's side headlamp was in a solid locked position with no play noted. The passenger side headlamp in the same position had some play. Is this what causes the headlamps to get out of synch and not stop in tandem?

Is the fix a stop adjustment to get rid of the slop? Or is the problem in the headlight drive? Before I dive in and make things worse, I thought I would ask the experienced here how to solve the problem of the winkin headlamps.

Thank you for help,
Peter

Check the connection on those little diodes. Look for a green wire going into a “black wrapped piece”
There’s a thread with pics ……I see if I can find
