Full Version: Engine compartment relay/silver box - WTH is this thing?

So im trying to diagnose a stuttering issue that seems to occur after about 15 min. of drive time. She starts cutting out at low RPM and then will climb erratically if I mash the throttle. I have installed a new flame thrower coil which does seem to give her more pep but still having this stuttering issue after warm/hot.

I unplugged this resistor (I think thats the name) and the engine stopped so it must be important but the wires are very brittle and look to be about to pull out from the ceramic tubes/cylinders.

Thanks for any insights as I have tried all the other diagnosis familiar to me.

Part 8a in the diagram. Ballast resistor for the FI on the 1.8l L-jet. May have luck posting a want to buy in the classifieds if you're looking for a replacement.

Contact Bruce Stone he had some NOS resistors.

I have several good used ones.
The usual problem with them is the wires get broken at the base of the resistors.

the resistor block is not the problem, it only fails when one of the wires disattaches itself causing one cylinder not to fire. Try points condenser dwell timing firsts. Resistor blocks are totally available by the way

How are your grounds? Especially the ground strap on the transmission.

i wonder if your problem is not fuel delivery related.
sounds like the symptoms.

like a filter is blocking?
or a bend in fuel line is collapsing and constricting?
or the sock in the tank is collapsing/blocking?
these sorts of things start to happen after a short period of running.
gunk builds up against the filter for instance.
after you switch off it floats away again and lets the fuel through - until repeat.
