What brand are people finding out there that are a good tire for the car?

I’m going with these in a 185 because it should correct my speedo error. But you can get them in a 165 as well.

Otherwise you can get reproductions from Coker Tire

I recently purchased a set of Nexen 175/65 15 from my local guy for $80. Nothing fancy, but they give a nice ride, probably close to stock

I've got about 4,000 miles on a set of BF Goodrich Advantage T/As (195/65R15) that I purchased on sale at Costco about a year ago. I believe these closely match the original tire size but just wider. I must say that I'm really impressed. They're very quiet yet perform very well. Longevity has yet to be proven. However, at that kind of mileage, it'll take me 10 years to get to 40,000 miles huh.gif

It looks like Vredestein has introduce a new v rated performance tire in 195/60-15 size. It kind of looks like the old Pirelli P600. This might be a good choice, although not many reviews or ratings yet:

The concerns about keeping the tires in cold conditions is a concern with these tires.

Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels, or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

Looks like with these tires you pretty much have to the keep the car on jack stands over the winter.

We have the same tires on the Factory six. They are good tires, but definitely not in the same performance class as a high performance summer only tire. They will squeal a lot when you get close to the limit. But they are a really good tire for a driver.

If you are looking for max performance, look for the tire used on a Miata for autocross. They use the same 15 inch rims on a Miata.

Hope that helps!

I put a set on my Bumblebee project last month, Wanted to go with the 165s but they were backordered a few months so went with the 175s.
Cool vintage look, proper sidewall height, and while I havent gone to crazy yet (still sorting the car out) the little i have pushed them they feel pretty sticky. It does feel like an autocross compound on a narrow, high sidewall, vintage tread tire.

Thankfully my garage is heated.

Have XWX with the dog bone pattern from Michelin. Got them from Coker.

Pretty expensive but nice ride.

agree.gif My bumblebee project might be getting a set of Vredesteins when I finally finish it in about 5 years blink.gif

Has anybody tried the Michelin XAS | 165VR15 tires? Cheaper than the XWXs but still expensive... because Michelin makes them smile.gif

Update: Just saw the post from above. Interesting. Might be a good option for an original sized tire.

I went with the V version, sticks like glue but I hate the look.
45*F minimum temp, I’m in Los Angeles, not getting below that.
The sidewalls are hedious, the designers name?

I really miss the old Pirelli P6’s nice thread pattern, V compound, 15 inch with various widths.

I need tires for my car and I've been looking at these for a while now. But I get worried about that damn disclaimer. I actually drive my car on crisp days. I'd need to keep 2 sets of wheels for the 914. :-/ I guess I need to suck it up and just get another set of all seasons. :-(

My tires are about 10 yrs old. Is it time for a change? Currently running 185/70s sprint classics. How about these as a replacement?

Pirelli P4 PERSIST AS PLUS - SIZE: 195/65R15

to all those running 195/65-15, I think you're giving away miles on your odometer. I clocked mine at 5mph faster than GPS actual.

Zach, I'm all in on the Vred's. I wouldn't worry too much about the temperature restriction unless you're actually in freezing conditions. My Michelin supersport tires have the same caution, but I routinely drive the 911 on crisp winter mornings. They never come fully up to temp, but they do generate grip after a few miles of driving.

The rolling radius of the 195/65-15 tires is 25”, vs 25.1 for the 165 size. The speedometers have always been optimistic, but the odometer should still be quite accurate.

Tires are only safe up to six years.
After that, in high temp highway situations, the can delaminate and cause a ton of body, fender damage as they just seem to fall apart at speed.

One time, my FIL…i trailered his old Volvo home….it was not cheap or pretty to fix.
My motto, tires are cheaper than bodywork.

I just replaced some old tires on my 911 and the guy at the local shop argued the old ones are perfectly good. I told him go ahead…they are free.

the XAS are really good. see my post.

as someone has noted above with the Veredestien - even they have upped their game.
the compounds are very soft. these are not the XAS of the 1960s/70s.
oh no. way better.

however be wary of rain. the tread patterns are not as sorted in the sense of pumping out rainwater from the tyre in aquaplane conditions. irrelevant to me. i don't drive the 914 in rain conditions these days. mainly because of risk from other drivers.

edit. ps.
i had those 195 comp TAs on my car back in the late 90s before i laid it up.
back then you could not get the re-issue tyres in correct dimensions for the car so i had to run the TAs. i hated them. very pleased to be rid of those. never a good memory on the little 1.8. just plain over-tyred for what it was and ruined the ride and steering feel.
very relieved that there are all these re-issues around. with $ cost to suit every budget.
the long nose 911 guys down here are all running the 185 pirellis now. can't remember off the top of my head what the are called. the CN whatever. they have the dog bone tread pattern like the original dunlops. you can't buy a set of those for love or money. thats how i managed to pick up a set of XAS. suddenly the 911 guys were off them and on to the next thing. handy for me.
all these tyres should be a lot cheaper in the USA than the cost we have to pay down here. but its still worth it.
Geezer914
Firestone Firehawk As high performance all season 195/65/15. Looks like they are discontinuing the size. Tire rack has them on close out. I bought a set of 195/60/15 last year and no longer see that size listed.
