hi, working on a 1975 914 1,8 5spd.
so; i'm replacing the rear cover for the transmission. its the cover that the speedo drive is located in.
i have it on but, i can't seem to get it to go on all the way. it is setting about 1/8" from seating all thew. i don't want to tighten the nuts until i can find out if this is normal or is there something i've missed or have out of alingment.
any suggestions would be great!

Full Version: trans cover
Nope. It has to completely close the gap. There's a piece or two inside the tail cone that can slip off and keep the piece from seating.
It will assemble without force or using the hardware to close the gap - or at least it should.

Fit the drive after the cover is on and seated ,cheers.
The reverse gear set (the loose bits) has a spacer at the bottom that has a moon shape cut that allows it to fully seat. If it is not properly on place it will not allow the gear set to fully seat. Pop the cover and remove the reverse bits to make sure it is seated correctly. The spacer is about as thick as the gap you are experiencing.

ok i have the drive on and that must be the issue.
i have the spacer with the "moon" cut in place and the spacer and bearing races on the reverse shaft but in spite of my bag and tag process, these wound up on the bench.
can anyone I.D. them?

ok so i attached a pic of the position of the cut spacer.
i also attached a pic of the inside of the cover and the trans gears. in the center of the cover there looks to be a bushing. the speedo gear coming out of the trans appears to be hitting that bush. on the old cover, that piece has worn away and i can not see what was there. it looks like, if that bushing was gone, it would work. can i remove that and not use it? it must be there for a reason. the numbers on the old and replacement case are the same.

I might suggest a dry fit with no gasket.
It should be flush when setting it on.
Look for debris in captured hole the pins fit into.
Ensure the pins fit easily in the holes.
Then place gasket over pins to ensure gasket is the correct shape.

here is what i've found.
after pulling the speedo drive i have the same problem. so i took a bore scope and had a look and i've attached a pic. the rod coming out of the trans that has the speedo gear on it, is hitting the case. i think the old case had the same problem and thats why it wore a hole in the case. so my questions are, is there a different case? or can i change the rod to a smaller one? is it possible to cut the rod or remove some material from the case? is there something else going on with the trans?

Looks like the bushing from the old cover is stuck on the end of the gear.
The RTV pictured is frowned upon. The gasket helps to set pinion depth.
The pinion depth is set by the gaskets between the intermediate plate and the transmission cause, not between the intermediate plate and the end cover.

was the old cover with the hole in it... caused by the speedo gear backing out?
thats from the large nut holding the gear stack coming loose and allowing the stack to move forward and back... eventually drives a hole through the rear case.
when mine did that... I did not reuse the speedo drive, as it was pretty damaged from boring through the case.
