@SirAndy .... Man, that is so so so close. I would be tempted to try to buy that case just so you at least have an almost spot-on case and at least it is the period correct 914-6 case.

I have a '71 914-6 case that is about 20 numbers off my original case just to have a correct 914-6 '71 case in the event I ever sell the car or decide to do another engine.

2 digits. I could pull the trigger on that one. If I needed a 6 case. Anyone inquire about pricing?

I will caution anyone thinking about doing business with DC Auto and Rob, their idea of a rebuildable motor is different then mine. In fact the only usable part my engines came with were the cases.

after the engines arrived I immediately pulled them apart and here is what I found

cam tower so twisted the rocker arms were stick

The other cam tower was junk, both sides were Left cams still wet and rusty

webers were seized and missing jets and jet holders

and the engine I paid an additional $500 for had a melted filter housing

When the point is to get the right case number so that you can burn into a $pendy concour$e re$to to sell your 914/6 to a big money collector for stoopit money...well, dem's the breaks...

Edit: after all, those engines were pulled from their original home for a reason: no one wanted them, most wanted to swap in a bigger engine. So it seems reasonable that they led a pretty ugly life...

every cylinder was rusted but then sanded with about 120 grit sand paper to fit the pistons back in.

I sent this to Rob and he sent me a set of 80 mm heads without valves and some useless pistons pistons

Engine 1

914/6 air cleaner- melted
Air cleaner snap cans – rusted thru
Weber IDA carbs – broken air correction screw, seized throttle shafts
Missing linkage cross bar, reverse lever and mounting brackets
Cam shafts pitted
Both cam towers – gouged cam bearing areas, second twisted
Oil Cooler – crushed & does not hold pressure
Heads (2.0 L1819d 911T) fly cut to 2.2L, inconsistent combustion chamber volumes, many studs missing
2.2L pistons and cylinders – water damaged, cylinders sanded
Missing 2 rear engine transmission mounting studs m10x105mm (999.062.099.02)

Engine 2

Only 1 K&N filter
Zenith cards - seized throttle shafts, incorrect for 914/6
Alternator ring cracked (fan and alternator acceptable)
Missing linkage cross bar, reverse lever and mounting brackets
fiberglass engine shroud - broken mounting holes, Incorrect version
Oil Cooler – AN? fitting welded to bottom
2.2L pistons and cylinders – mismatched set, water damaged, cylinders sanded
Oil pump - Seized
Missing flywheel
Missing 2 rear transmission mounting studs m10x105mm (999.062.099.02)

Thanks for the heads-up about DC Auto and Rob. Finding trusted suppliers is always a gamble and anxiety ridden. I have been burned a couple of times while gathering parts for my car. Fortunately for me the parts I was burned on were not that expensive.

Whatever you do, don’t scrap them!

I've done well at DC, but I left with a truckload of cars.

Adam, you had a better result due to ton's of experience and inspecting in person while making the purchase. Meanwhile Glenn got a pig in a poke.

Its easier when you go and inspect the parts yourself. I've had good luck and bad luck with DC Auto. The last part i bought was a 911 front suspension bottom cover. It was rusted and banged up pretty bad. I threw it away and bought a new one for not much more money.
Also beware of LA Dismantler. I bought a motor from them and as soon as I got it home I did a leak down test and 3 of the 6 cylinders were really bad. They said I was not a "real" shop, so too bad. By the time I could get into a real shop, the warranty was gone. I should of did a leak down before pulling the exhaust and other stuff off of it. I would also recommend getting the warranty in writing and make them do a leak down in front of you.
