OK, so I’ve scoured previous post about this topic and I’m now at this point.
-cleaning up some previous owner work
- VDO fuel gauge part number V301030. Rated 0 to 90 ohms.
- New stock sending unit putting out 36 ohms now as gas tank about 1/2 full.
- all wires continuity tested and I’m sure i all hooked up correctly. Yes-grounds all
checked.
Problem- gauge reads full.
-assumption the pin configuration on the sending unit plug is correct- see pic

Fix?
- install VDO gauge v301020. Range 10-73 ohms
- Will this gauge work close enough with the stock sender?

Or…. Do I need to replace the stock sending unit to match the gauge ohm range exactly?

0-90 is the stock range.

References I’ve seen is the stock is 0- 70.
I’ll keep looking into it just in I’m wrong.

Also, keep in mind that a 0-90 ohm gauge will not behave the same as a 90-0 ohm gauge. One will read full at 90 ohms, the other will read full at 0 ohms.

Believe the correct VDO gauge is 301 020 which isn't made. I found a NOS gauge a while back.

Reading through my old thread, I found a VDO 301-220 which works well. Run the 914 fairly low on fuel and it reads it. Fill the tank and it reads it. So pretty darn close to matching up with the sending unit.

I also went though this recently, here are my notes:

Use VDO Part Number 301 020 with the OEM 914 fuel sender; (spec'd for Beetle O.E. sender or VDO 221012 sender): 73 - 10 Ohms, "Fuel"
The reading will be off slightly but will not be noticeable

75ohms full, 5 ohms empty is pretty accurate

Mine measured 3 ohms empty and 73 ohms full.

Fuel gauge itself has two wires:
Red/White: keyed power
Green: to the sender

The black wire goes to the low fuel lamp

Sender has three wires:
Green: gauge
Brown: ground
Black: low fuel light inside the gauge

Thanks so much. My suspicion was of all the VDO fuel gauges, that might work as the ohms looked like a close match to the stock fuel sender. I talked to a tech at jbugs but he couldn't tell me if that gauge would work with the stock sender. He said he just wasn't all that knowledgeable about Porsche stuff. Fair enough.

It’s pretty accurate from what I can tell- certainly more accurate than reading full all the time!

One problem solved.
