Hi all , really desperate now , i have a 1972 914 with a 2.0 , i have had it all sprayed now and looks the part + added twin 40 webbers , but i need help on the wiring as its just shot i have bad eaths i cant get my lights to pop up, rear tail lights have no power to them etc etc , really this car needs totally re wiring, is there a place i can get a new complete loom , or wiring diagram , or does anybody in West Yorkshire rewire these cars ? totally desperate now , and loosing the will to live

When I was restoring my '62 bug
I had considered installing a new harness
but many advised me that the old harnesses
were much more robust
to just clean them up
make good contacts and grounds etc.
and that it would be fine.

Is this true of the 914s
Or are the new harnesses better?

That just depends on how the car was maintained and so many variables to that. Hard to say unless it can be inspected. Some cars have fairly nice wiring others are totally shot or barely holding it together.

The OP may be only in a scenario where now that it was painted he needs to scrape down to bare metal all the ground points. OR maybe the wiring is indeed shot.

OP can you give a little more context? Was the car pulled apart for the paint job or was this an exterior only kind of quickee job? Was the wiring all disconnected? Hard to assess without more detail....

This guy seems at the end of his rope (literally!!!).

I bought a nos 914 harness. Wires are supple without any cracks in the insulation. On all my 914’s, the wires are hard and some have issues. I’m glad they still work but it’s hard to expect much from 50 year old wire that lived in sometimes extreme environments. I bet heat is the big issue, especially for the housing. Mice also do their share of damage.

My gut reaction would be to keep the original unless it's really burnt or otherwise damaged. New harnesses are quite expensive.

step back, take a breath and get some help if needed.
