Full Version: “Headers” for a 4?

Hello, I am considering buying a set of Dansk race tubes or a set of Bursch x pipe headers for my 2.0. Does anyone here have any experience with either of these?
I don’t need heat in my car. Planning to remove exchangers and dampers under the car for easier access for maintenance etc.
Is one better than the next? Both are stainless construction…..anybody with direct knowledge or experience? I would love to learn more about these.
Also, best way to cap heater tubes as they exit body…. Need to keep critters and road debris out!!!
Thanks.

IMO, if you don't need heat you open up so many better options for actual headers.

The DANSK tubes are expensive and leave you with the same limitations of heat exchangers without any of the upside.

Eurorace costs about the same, gets you an actual 4-1 collector and stub connectors.

Tangerine costs a little more, and is a lot nicer of a system.

MSD gets you a stout system that is very customizable.

All of these are way better then the DANSK tubes.

Get some plastic caps from a paint can or similar and secure with a metal worm drive strap. Sounds a little hokey but works great.

Ideally what ever set up I purchase would bolt up to factory type muffler, I have a stainless muffler from Ben. Performance would be a bonus, but not a requirement. At some point the engine will be built to a 2056… nothing too crazy.

I have a set of headers from Marty from MSDS and they’re amazing, from a 914World member, and sound great

Similar experience here with MSDS. Also can understand Freezin's idea to have a factory type muffler.

I just installed the Dansk 2.0l exhaust tubes and quality product, fit great.

Chris Foley makes an excellent race tested set up. Tangerine Racing. East Coast company.

Tangerine costs a LOT more than any of the other options, also good chance it might take a while to get it as Chris is a one man shop. Was over 18 months from time of ordering to get mine. That said they are far nicer, the only header option with some availability of heat, and the only tuned 4-2-1 setup you can get.

Euro race makes good power over a stock setup but mine always leaked at the collector, tried everything for years and then just gave up and ordered a Tangerine system. Granted I have an older eurorace setup with springs on the collector vs bolts that the newer ones seem to have, with a slip fit 4-1 collector though I suspect it may still be an issue.

A local guy has the MSDS setup, no leaks but as stated doesnt have stubs, and with the way all header systems merge both sides of the engine crossing under the case/trans requiring to pull the exhaust more than you might a stock setup, its REALLY nice to have stubs.

Thank you all for the replies so far, still following, no decision has been made, still considering/ researching options…. idea.gif

MSDS is the only four cylinder way to go

I'm guessing you'll get one a lot faster now; I was at his shop last week and the list on the wall of pending exhaust builds was down to just one (that list was at LEAST half a dozen pending before Christmas).

It is the nicest highest-quality systems I've seen, and sounds excellent. I have a new one for my race car to replace his first-generation system that's on there now, and I am tempted to put that older 25-yr-old system in my street car (I do like having heat though...)

Call him.

I've got this one.. but there's been several suggestions for this style but unless there's one I don't know about, it doesn't fit the requirements of being able to mount to a stock style muffler. shades.gif

...

James' order came at a time of peak disorder for me. In 2022, the year I turned 65, I just couldn't get motivated to work the extra hours necessary to eliminate a backlog that had built up over the previous 4 years.
However, I've done a lot of product development over the past 2 years, including redesigns, and extensive fixture and tooling work. As a result, my more popular items are now easier for me to maintain inventory, and header assembly goes quicker and more smoothly.
Somehow I completed 6 full exhaust systems and several mufflers in the past 6 months, completely eliminating my backlog of exhaust work.
Going forward, I'm implementing firm production dates for the built-to-order items, at intervals I believe I can keep up with.

Its all good, and just to be clear I wasn't trying to disparage anyone, just setting expectations. Good things come to those who wait and after having seen one of your systems on my buddies car (same one you did the custom Jenvy cable linkage for) I knew it was the one to get. The time table worked out pretty well for me too, allowed for a bit of scope creep on my end.

It was going to be installed on this:

And now its going on this

@ChrisFoley

Im a bit of a data nerd and really interested to see the difference with your setup vs the eternally leaking Eurorace setup. I probably wont dyno it before the swap, but as this is my Megasquirt development car I should be able to see the differences in the volumetric efficiency table once I retune with the new headers.

As it stands right now this motor comes on like a switch around 3800RPM and makes all it power from there to about 6500. This is also reflected in the Ve table. My hope is that with the 4-2-1 setup I might be able to eek out a little more torque in the 2500-3800 range. But even if it doesn't, not leaking will already be a huge improvement.

I thought that muffler looked familiar.
Today I was rummaging thru photo files and saw it on my fabrication fixture - picture taken in 2009. One of a kind, custom.

Agree with Mark on caps for the heater tubes. I’ve got a one season used MSDS system if interested DM me. Went to SSIs and a Ben sport muffler.
