Bought my teener with three exhaust systems. Previous owner installed stainless heat exchangers (thank you) and installed a stock replacement muffler that is in poor condition.
Included in the sale is a single Bursh exhaust and quad Ansen style. Which one has a better exhaust note and the advantages of each. Help me decide. Thanks!Click to view attachment I

Bursch muffler. That manza 4 tip is heavy.

Bursh is the way to go.
mate914
Bursh sounds sooo much better and is also less weight.

I would go with the Bursch. You can make it look nicer with some sanding and POR15 Manifold Gray (although you must cure it... to do this I mounted it and drove for a few minutes).

I would install the single-tip all day long. beerchug.gif

I'd go Bursch for the facts mentioned above AND...

It blends all 4 cylinders together!

Give you a killer spot for an O2 sensor.

Blending all 4 together makes it sound better IMO!

No brainer. The Ansa / Monza style is heavy, obnoxiously loud, and often doesn't fit well under the stock valence.

I had one on my first 914. Loved it then but I would never do it now. It did rust out quickly.

yes certainly the bursch, but my preference these days would be the factory original replacement

Definitely the Bursch!

I had one one my yellow 73 because the tips went well. Lol

As soon I started exploring better options that sucker was gone.

I put a new Dansk on my 1.7. Single pipe like the original. Very quiet. I bought it from George at AA. Finding a tightly fitting push on chrome tail pipe cover was a PITA. It took several iterations.

@Artfrombama

if you are handy with a welder i have a tip for you.
the stock muffler on a 1.8 is in fact a late bus muffler.
except for one thing.
the inlet flanges on the muffler are welded on upside down compared to a 914 muffler.
all the strange dents formed in the 914 muffler that are visible on the bottom face the other way up on the bus and allow the muffler to fit against the bottom of the fan casting and for the dipstick tube to pass above it. was also on the VW 412. right hand side tailpipe.

if you go to VW parts website you will find that dansk bus muffler is about half the $ of the same thing for a 914. blink.gif sad.gif smile.gif

you cut those inlet flanges off and weld them back on upside down.

i was real lucky about 25 years ago. i found a stainless bus muffler here in Aus.
not entirely certain whether it was an Aus parts manufacturer who made it or whether its german and originates from the 70s or 80s. but i did the mod on it and i've got an entire stainless system from heat exchangers through to muffler.
it will outlast me and the next owner.

only disadvantage. it sounds tinny and horrible until it warms up. its very funny how the tone changes for the exhaust note from stone cold start up to fully warmed. biggrin.gif

otherwise. go for that bursch single outlet system you got for free.
those four tip ansas are over the top and look plain silly.

there is also all sorts of weird versions of this late muffler type.
like super quiet ones for 412s that were a bit more restricted internally etc.
but as far as i can determine, the 914 got the bus one. which was i believe less restricted internally.

Keep and restore the Bursch, it's a decent design.
Have your muffler shop add a 2.5" (#f4) flange just after the 4x2x1 merge. Bolt on a 2.25" core magnaflow muffler; then blast and ceramic coat everything. You get a great working/sounding system, not heavy and run a custom (R exit) style valance/ or no valance

If you are handy with a hole saw/ Dremel you can run a (fiberglass) valance creation like this...

We also had the OE h/b's opened up (inside tube dia.) for more flow 'Extrude Hone process; then ceramic coated with the Bursch/ Magnaflow combo. Shut the engine off after 20 min POC session...it's cool to the touch in 15 min.

@drem914 The stainless Bursch looks great. How's it sound? Comparable to the old Bursch?

I love what you did here with this muffler set up!! Can you elaborate on which core muffler you used specifically? (searching aftermarket muffler boxes on google always gets me confused)

h/b's = heater boxes (?), you extrude honed the entire length? Interesting, but .. um, how?

.
Maltese Falcon
@Literati914
Yes, entire inside dia of entire lengths of H /B's heater boxes. The POC general comp rules did not allow exhaust headers in CI class>>so extrude hone it was!
www.extrudehonecom

www.magnaflow.com
Search for their cylindrical SS mufflers: 4" dia; 2¼" core, approx 18-24" length. Not a glass pack, they use a better packing material> does not burn away which will give you a louder Db with time.

@TX914 Marginally louder and a little deeper. The secondary resonators from original design are no longer there and the pipe lengths are shortened also.

@drem914 have your local welding guy attach a small piece of ⅛ x 1" flatbar inbetween the egr tube and main 2" section of Bursch extractor; thank me later when you don't need to R+R biggrin.gif

@Maltese Falcon
Sorry, but what is the tube even for? I run dual carbs, but even when I had FI, I had nothing connected to it either? Is the flat bar weld just to stabilize the tube?
Maltese Falcon
@drem914 does in fact look like an EGR tube, and should be capped at the open end/ racing use only. The small metal bar (weld in place) will keep the tube from vibrating itself off of the exhaust system.
I do have an egr-cap, which we make for the classic (off road use) FJ60 LC, looks like it's close/or you can make work.
Yours for asking <n/c> biggrin.gif

Hi, Thanks for posting this picture. Im the manager of Bursch Exhaust currently and we were hoping to get some feedback on how you liked your system. beerchug.gif
Ishley
I have a '72 that came with a Bursch... I'm not sure how old it was when I got it.

I thought mine was too loud... so I cut out the muffler and installed a magna-flow unit that matched the pipe design. It went better that I thought it would... but I still want to change the outlet pipe. It's still fairly loud... but it's a nicer/beefer sound without all the harsh pop I was getting.

It might have just been an old unit... so I can't really say how a newer one would sound. I cleaned it up.... installed an O2 bung and painted it all black with Cerekote Ceramic paint. I have a large rear valence... so you can't really see it.
